Principal Map Visualization Designer

What's the role?

We're seeking a Principal Map Visualization Designer to lead the visual direction of in‑car map experiences across infotainment (IVI), instrument cluster, AR HUD, and ADAS contexts.

You'll define how spatial information communicates in the vehicle-balancing glanceability, safety, legibility, performance, and brand expression-while shaping a unified visual language for map styling, spatial information design, and data‑driven behavior.

As part of our Map Visualization & Cartography Design System team, you'll craft visually clear solutions for complex driving scenarios and standardize how styles are created, tested, and implemented across platforms.

Responsibilities

• Own the visual direction for automotive map styling: color, typography, labeling, iconography, hierarchy, motion, and behavior.
• Design for driver glance time, situational awareness, and real‑time responsiveness, considering hardware/display constraints.
• Specify styling rules, rendering behaviors, and interaction cues; maintain comprehensive guidelines and documentation with a strong focus on 3D.
• Collaborate closely with engineering on data pipelines, rendering constraints, performance targets, and platform capabilities.
• Collaborate with HMI/UX, cartography, and engineering to align on sensor inputs, data pipelines, performance, and platform capabilities.
• Evolve our automotive spatial design system to ensure consistency across IVI, cluster, AR HUD, and ADAS surfaces.
• Drive multiple projects end‑to‑end, align stakeholders, and deliver to automotive timelines and quality standards.

NOTE: This is an individual contributor (IC) position.

Who are you?

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Visual / Interaction Design, Geo‑Design, or related field.
• 5+ years in map visualization, visual design, spatial or cartographic design; automotive experience strongly preferred.
• Portfolio showing map styling and systematic visualization for real products (in‑car work is a plus).
• Solid understanding of geospatial data and cartographic fundamentals (layers, attributes, zoom/scale behavior, projections, accessibility).
• Clear communicator; able to explain decisions and trade‑offs to diverse audiences.
• Experience with design systems and component libraries for spatial UIs.
• Tools: Blender, Adobe Creative Suite, Figma; familiarity with GIS tools, Unity/Unreal, HTML/CSS, and Git/GitHub/GitLab is a plus.
• Comfortable working in agile product teams.
