About the Role
hackajob is collaborating with Mercor to connect exceptional tech professionals with a unique opportunity as a Software Engineer Trajectory Part Time. In this role, experienced engineers support high-impact research collaborations with leading AI labs by building training datasets that improve AI model reasoning and problem-solving on real-world coding tasks.
About the Project
You will annotate frontier-model trajectories on SWE-bench style tasks derived from real open-source repositories. As closed-source models often do not expose internal reasoning traces, you will reconstruct and annotate the reasoning portions of model trajectories using your problem-solving process and full task context.
Key Responsibilities
- Review model-generated code trajectories on realistic software engineering tasks
- Reconstruct chain-of-thought reasoning for solution steps
- Annotate decision points, debugging logic, and problem-solving strategies
- Utilize full task context to infer plausible reasoning
- Ensure annotations reflect realistic developer thought processes and technical accuracy
Ideal Qualifications
- 2+ years of practical software engineering experience
- Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (advanced degree preferred)
- Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, or similar languages
- Experience with version control workflows (Git, PRs, issue tracking)
- Ability to articulate technical reasoning with clarity
Project Timeline
Start Date: ImmediateDuration: 1–2 monthsCommitment: Part-time (15–25 hours/week, flexible up to 40 hours/week)
