Role Overview: JD Legal Expert AI Model Trainer

Mercor is actively seeking highly skilled legal experts to contribute to a supervised fine-tuning (SFT) dataset development project, a collaborative effort with a leading AI lab. As a JD Legal Expert AI Model Trainer, you will play a crucial role in crafting and evaluating high-quality legal prompts and responses. This work is essential for enhancing AI model performance in critical areas such as reasoning, summarization, and in-depth analysis across various legal domains. This presents a unique and significant opportunity to directly influence the development of frontier AI systems by leveraging your specialized legal expertise.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft and meticulously review prompts that encompass complex legal reasoning, statutory interpretation, intricate case analysis, and various procedural workflows.
• Evaluate and refine AI-generated responses to guarantee their legal accuracy, clarity, and strict adherence to professional legal standards.
• Develop diverse variants of prompts, adjusting for style, instruction-following nuances, and distinct user personas (e.g., tailoring content for a lawyer versus a layperson).
• Proactively identify and develop examples designed to expose potential failures in AI model reasoning or content handling capabilities.
• Engage in asynchronous collaboration with Mercor’s dedicated research coordination team as and when required to ensure project alignment and success.

Ideal Qualifications

• Possession of a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or an equivalent legal degree from a reputable institution.
• A minimum of 2+ years of hands-on experience practicing law or substantial experience within a legal academic or research environment.
• Demonstrated expertise in one or more specialized legal areas, including but not limited to constitutional law, contracts, criminal procedure, or administrative law.
• Exceptional analytical writing skills, coupled with a deep familiarity with the structure and argumentation of legal documents.
• Previous experience in legal education or legal content development is considered a valuable asset.

More About the Opportunity

• This is a remote and asynchronous position, offering significant flexibility to set your own working hours.
• An expected commitment of 10–20 hours per week is anticipated.
• The project has an initial duration of approximately 4+ months, with a strong possibility for extension based on project needs and performance.
• Involves both short-form and long-form legal content creation and thorough review.

Compensation & Contract Terms

• Compensation ranges from $80–100 per hour for U.S.-based applicants, with rates adjusted for other geographical locations.
• Payments are processed weekly via Stripe Connect, ensuring timely remuneration.
• You will be classified and engaged as an independent contractor for this role.
