Job Description

About the Job

A problem isn’t truly solved until it’s solved for all. That’s why Googlers build products that help create opportunities for everyone, whether down the street or across the globe. As a Technical Program Manager at Google, you’ll use your technical expertise to lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects from start to finish. You’ll work with stakeholders to plan requirements, identify risks, manage project schedules, and communicate clearly with cross-functional partners across the company. You're equally comfortable explaining your team's analyses and recommendations to executives as you are discussing the technical tradeoffs in product development with engineers.

As a Technical Program Manager, Geospatial Network Infrastructure, you will be responsible for the accurate planning of Google's fiber optic network infrastructure within our network inventory system. You will take high-level network plans and translate them into detailed, geo-spatially accurate fiber routes, types, and connectivity. Your work is critical in providing downstream teams, including network acquisition, fiber delivery, and transport deployment, with well-defined and buildable network paths.

In this role, you will use your strong technical judgment in optical networking, fiber routing, and meticulous attention to detail in managing network inventory data. You will work closely with network planners on the same team, serving as the primary implementer of the detailed path design and the first point of contact for technical considerations arising from the high-level plan from cross-functional teams.

Behind everything our users see online is the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team to keep it running. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google's product portfolio possible. We're proud to be our engineers' engineers and love voiding warranties by taking things apart so we can rebuild them. We keep our networks up and running, ensuring our users have the best and fastest experience possible.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure vendor-provided terrestrial fiber routes are accurately and completely represented in our internal fiber inventory system.
  • Model and validate proper fiber entrance paths and points of entry into Google campuses and other facilities, consistent with the planned network architecture.
  • Research and align specific available or planned vendor fiber routes, ensuring route resilience, and documenting the detailed end-to-end path.
  • Stitch together various fiber assets (cables, splices, panels) to create contiguous, accurate end-to-end network paths that reflect the design intent.
  • Apply network principles to OSP (Outside Plant) and ISP (Inside Plant) fiber routing to minimize single points of failure, making informed technical decisions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience in program management.
  • Experience with geospatial network data and fiber route mapping (e.g., fiber optic pathing, route analysis, or working with KML/KMZ formats).
  • Experience with inside and outside plant (ISP/OSP) fiber optic network infrastructure (e.g., fiber splicing, cable installation, or hardware termination panels).

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience managing cross-functional or cross-team projects.
  • Experience working cross-functionally to design and build scalable construction, installation, and support processes.
  • Experience utilizing existing systems and processes to manage optimization.
  • Knowledge of optical communications networking.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
