About the Systems Development Engineer Role at Google Distributed Cloud
Systems Development Engineering (SDE) at Google focuses on managing services and systems at scale. SDEs leverage their engineering discipline to automate routine tasks and reduce operational toil. This role emphasizes developing tools and solutions to proactively address problems, rather than just fixing bugs. A core aspect involves implementing robust observability, transforming data into actionable insights to ensure the operational efficiency of Google systems, services, virtual compute environments, and underlying operating systems. With Google Distributed Cloud (GDC), the team is building an industry-leading private and hybrid cloud offering, extending Google Cloud's AI-led Services and Infrastructure to on-premise platforms. Google Cloud empowers organizations globally to digitally transform, delivering enterprise-grade solutions and cutting-edge technology to over 200 countries and territories.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or an IT-related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3 years of experience with systems automation, and with systems design and implementation.
- 3 years of experience with technical infrastructure (e.g., deployment, maintenance, troubleshooting).
- 3 years of experience with Kubernetes or a similar container orchestration platform.
- 3 years of experience with TCP/IP networking and with diagnosing and resolving network-related issues.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3 years of experience working with vendors or customers.
- Experience as a customer solution engineer.
- Experience in SRE or IT production systems engineering.
- Experience in physical server, storage, and network devices, and scripting (Bash, Perl, Python, Ruby, etc.) to help with automation of routine tasks.
- Excellent investigative, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to empathize with customers and understand their needs.
Responsibilities
- Perform day-to-day troubleshooting and resolution of infrastructure issues (e.g., Network, Storage, Servers, OS, Kubernetes, etc.).
- Participate in customer, partner, and internal team deployments which require international travel.
- Personify and own the IO persona experiences defined in GDC air-gapped product.
- Participate in the on-call rotation to support escalations from client deployments as well as internal reference deployments.
