About the Role

The Privacy Engineer, Google Ads is a critical role within the Ads Privacy team, ensuring the ads business operates sustainably by prioritizing user privacy. This position involves providing infrastructure for secure user data access and auditability, reviewing every launch to maintain privacy commitments, and upholding regulatory requirements like GDPR and CPRA. You will be instrumental in designing ads products and services with a 'privacy by design, privacy by default' approach.

Google Ads powers the open internet, connecting people, publishers, advertisers, and Google through advanced technology. The diverse teams build advertising products across search, display, shopping, travel, video advertising, and analytics. Our goal is to create trusted experiences between users and businesses with useful ads, fostering growth for businesses of all sizes, from small enterprises to large brands and YouTube creators, through effective, measurable advertiser tools. This role also enables Google to engage with customers at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Guide engineering teams during product development to ensure transparent data collection and usage, user privacy protection, and risk mitigation.
  • Play a critical role in Google’s product design process and launch cycle.
  • Conduct technical and policy reviews to identify and escalate potential privacy concerns.
  • Lead and manage proactive development of new privacy features and tools.
  • Respond to privacy incidents, including collecting information on scope and root cause, and managing remediation.
  • Work with cross-functional teams within Google on privacy engineering activities related to privacy, security, data protection, and data storage.
  • Produce artifacts to guide and train others on ads privacy best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience working in a privacy related field (e.g., security engineering, data engineering, compliance engineering etc.).
  • 2 years of experience designing solutions that maintain or enhance the privacy posture of the organization by analyzing and assessing proposed engineering designs (e.g., product features, infrastructure systems).
  • 2 years of experience applying privacy technologies (e.g., differential privacy, automated access management solutions, etc.), and customizing existing solutions and frameworks to meet organizational needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with common regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) and working with regulators or regulatory authorities.
  • Experience with the software development lifecycle.
  • Experience in machine learning and generative AI privacy.
  • Knowledge of the ads or online commerce domain.
  • Understanding of technical privacy issues (cookie management, encryption).
