About the Role
As an External Affairs Manager, US Federal Affairs at Google, you will be a key member of the Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) team, working across regions, product areas, and functions. This role combines creativity and intellectual excellence with the organizational skills necessary to manage diverse campaigns, projects, and initiatives. You will advocate for Google, bringing external perspectives back into the company to inform its perception and direction. You will work within the US Federal Affairs and US State and Local teams, primarily responsible for managing Google's external engagement on workforce public policy issues, with a specific focus on the state of California.
The role involves managing relationships with external stakeholders to facilitate dialogue regarding the technology sector and the workforce. Your focus will be on identifying areas of collaboration for workforce development and ensuring clear communication between the technology industry and relevant external stakeholders.
Google Client Services, a part of the GAPP team, manages the company’s engagement with executive branch officials, legislators, regulators, and third parties in shaping public policy in the United States. Working closely with Google leaders, GAPP aims to identify key policy issues, views, and opinions, distilling and sharing the company’s perspectives with external stakeholders. While the focus is often on challenges affecting the Internet, the issue areas are increasingly broad, encompassing where public policy, business, and technology intersect.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 10 years of experience working on technology policy issues within government, think tanks, public interest groups, law, or relevant industry associations.
- 10 years of leadership experience within a labor/workforce organization.
- Experience leading coalition building work and the public policy making process.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience within both state and national labor/workforce organizations.
- Experience working on tech policy issues and familiarity with the current state of the debate.
- Experience in budget management or political campaign.
- Knowledge of California labor and workforce policy issues.
- Ability to build collaborative partnerships with labor leaders and other external stakeholders.
- Ability to make decisions while exercising good judgment on their own in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary representative for Google in engagements with labor and workforce associations at state and national levels, while monitoring and crafting engagement on legislation and regulatory issues related to labor, workforce, and tangent policies.
- Manage a portfolio of external relationships to maintain open channels of communication on public policy, facilitating dialogue on workforce training, digital access, and economic opportunity.
- Articulate the company’s policy positions to external stakeholders by participating in working groups and roundtables to ensure Google acts as a constructive partner in discussions regarding the future of work.
- Synthesize stakeholder perspectives to identify opportunities for consensus on legislative frameworks.
- Act as a subject matter advisor to cross-functional partners and leaders regarding workforce and employment public policy issues.
