About the Role: Director of Engineering, Maps Search and Explore at Google

Google is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead the Search and Explore organization within Geo services. This critical role involves driving the strategy and roadmap for Local Search in Google Maps, with a specific focus on leveraging Generative AI to revolutionize real-world problem solving. You will lead a highly skilled cross-functional team, collaborating across engineering, product, user experience, research, legal, and privacy to enhance how billions of people explore the world and navigate their daily lives.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 15 years of experience in engineering management.
• Proven experience building consumer products based on machine-learned outcomes, effectively reconciling product requirements with model capabilities.
• Extensive experience developing customer-facing functionality, including guiding early-stage products to achieve product-market fit and scaling them for large user bases.

• Demonstrated organizational leadership, with a strong ability to partner effectively across diverse teams and cross-functional boundaries.
• Exceptional communication skills, capable of representing complex technical, product, or business concepts to senior leadership.
• Proven success in leading and scaling engineering teams, including fostering talent growth and promoting healthy engineering organizations.
• A track record of driving initiatives from strategic planning to successful execution, tackling open-ended and ambiguous problems.
• A deep passion for technology and significant technical depth to diagnose root causes of complex technical challenges and provide effective guidance for their resolution.

The team also empowers developers to integrate Google Maps Platform into their applications and websites. Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a large team of 60+ engineers located in the Bay Area and NYC, covering Android, iOS, backend systems, and quality/ranking/evaluation.
• Develop the strategic vision and oversee the execution of business-critical initiatives, requiring strong collaboration with partner teams across Maps, Search, and Gemini.
• Take full end-to-end accountability for addressing user problems, demonstrating deep user empathy and applying a blend of quantitative and qualitative problem-solving approaches through cross-functional leadership.
• Create a robust toolkit of Geo capabilities that can power conversational products within Google Maps and across other Google platforms.
• Strategically balance direct contributions to Google Maps outcomes with the platformization and export of key technical achievements to benefit the broader engineering organization.
