Job Description
Product Counsel AI
Google DeepMind is seeking a Product Counsel with a focus on AI to advise on legal matters critical to the development and release of Artificial Intelligence models, products, and systems. This is a heavily copyright-focused position requiring guidance across multiple jurisdictions regarding AI model training, outputs, dataset collection, transactions, and open-source strategy. You will also navigate machine learning research, product development, copyright policy advocacy, and emerging global legislation.

About the Role
In this role, you will:
- Identify and advise on legal considerations for DeepMind research and product development, including liability, compliance, copyright, and data issues related to AI systems.
- Monitor and interpret evolving global AI regulations and compliance requirements, translating them into actionable technical guardrails.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to establish external advocacy positions on AI regulatory regimes and advise on their implications.
- Support drafting and discussion of agreements, and evaluate open-source licenses for code and data.
- Advise executive management on risks associated with AI research direction and governance frameworks, presenting mitigation options.
Minimum Qualifications
- JD, equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
- Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law in the position's location.
- 3 years of post-qualification experience in private practice or an in-house legal team.
- Experience partnering with executives and stakeholders on legal matters.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with government reporting and compliance, policy development, or supporting research using a risk-based framework.
- Familiarity with AI regulatory regimes, emerging regulations, and existing legal frameworks.
- Familiarity with public and government debates around AI and its global regulatory and policy landscapes (US, UK, EU).
- Understanding of AI technical workings (ML training, model architectures, serving lifecycles).
