Job Description

Overview of the Role: Staff Product Manager AI Developer Tools at GitLab

As a Staff Product Manager AI Developer Tools at GitLab, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of developer interaction with GitLab Duo, our AI-powered DevSecOps Platform. Your leadership will define the strategy and roadmap for how developers harness GitLab Duo directly within their existing workflows, specifically through the command line (CLI) and integrated development environment (IDE) extensions. This role builds upon GitLab's core CLI vision, which aims to support developers across critical workflows like configuration management, contribution (issues, merge requests, and pipelines), automation of repetitive tasks, and fostering flexibility for diverse engineering practices. A key focus will be to embed AI-native experiences seamlessly into these essential developer touchpoints via the CLI and IDE extensions.

Strategic Areas of Focus

You will contribute to several strategic initiatives, including but not limited to:

  • Building a best-in-class GitLab Duo CLI experience that integrates naturally into real-world command line workflows, with an emphasis on extending magnetic capabilities such as intelligent assistance and deeper GitLab Duo Chat integration.
  • Developing and evolving IDE extensions that bring GitLab Duo directly into developers' day-to-day coding environments, ensuring a complementary experience to the command line.

What You'll Do

In this role, you will:

  • Define and drive the product strategy for GitLab's AI Developer Tools, concentrating on CLI experiences and IDE extensions that intuitively fit into developers' daily routines.
  • Partner closely with engineering, design, and various cross-functional stakeholders to transform developer needs into clear problem statements, prioritized roadmaps, and shippable product increments.
  • Take ownership of the roadmap and execution for the CLI as a primary deliverable, making informed tradeoffs that balance developer experience, product quality, and iterative delivery cycles.
  • Lead comprehensive discovery efforts with actual software developers, including hands-on testing of workflows, to validate usability, measure impact, and continually enhance end-to-end experiences on both the command line and within the IDE.
  • Coordinate launches and ongoing iteration for new capabilities, ensuring alignment and release readiness across product, engineering, and go-to-market partners as necessary.
  • Remain current on the rapidly evolving AI coding assistant landscape and developer tool expectations, leveraging competitive and market insights to inform product decisions while maintaining focus on GitLab's distinctive platform approach.
  • Contribute as a senior individual contributor within the AI Product team, collaborating within a close-knit group of teammates and reporting directly to the Vice President of Product for AI.

What You'll Bring

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Demonstrated product management experience, having owned developer-facing products from initial discovery through successful launch (e.g., B2B SaaS, developer platforms, or tooling).
  • A strong technical foundation, including hands-on software development experience and comfort working extensively in the command line daily.
  • Familiarity with the AI coding assistant landscape, integrated developer workflows, and how modern developer tools are evaluated and adopted, including competitive offerings.
  • Proven experience defining product strategy, shaping roadmaps, and closely partnering with engineering to ship high-quality CLI-first experiences (e.g., AI agent workflows or AI-assisted development on the command line).
  • An openness to continuous learning and iteration, coupled with a self-directed approach to staying current on developer tooling trends and the fast-moving AI ecosystem.

How GitLab Will Support You

GitLab is committed to supporting its team members through:

  • Comprehensive benefits package designed to support your health, finances, and overall well-being.
  • Flexible Paid Time Off policies.
  • Team Member Resource Groups for community and support.
  • Equity Compensation & Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Growth and Development Fund for continuous learning.
  • Parental leave benefits.
  • Home office support to ensure a comfortable remote work setup.

Please note that we welcome interest from candidates with varying levels of experience; many successful candidates do not meet every single requirement. Additionally, studies have shown that people from underrepresented groups are less likely to apply to a job unless they meet every single qualification. If you're excited about this role, please apply and allow our recruiters to assess your application.
