This role is remote in the United States.
Overview
GitHub is the home for software development where innovation meets collaboration. As an Applied Science Intern, you will partner with engineering and product teams to advance AI-powered developer experiences by translating research ideas into scalable innovations.
Responsibilities
- Work on a specialized research project advancing AI-powered tools.
- Carry out research, run experiments, and build prototypes.
- Collaborate with Applied Scientists and Engineers to influence product decisions.
- Focus on evaluation, agentic AI approaches, or post-training strategies.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Pursuing a PhD in Machine Learning, AI, Statistics, Computer Science or a similar field.
- Experience in machine learning, natural language processing, information retrieval, or related areas.
- Available full time for a minimum of 12 weeks, with no concurrent coursework.
- 2+ years experience with Python or another relevant programming language.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Published research or strong artifacts in AI or machine learning.
- Experience with evaluation methodologies, dataset building, or experimental pipelines.
- Familiarity with developer tooling and programming languages.
- Strong communication skills for cross-team collaboration.
- Experience with LLMs for coding or building developer tools.
Compensation
The base salary range is USD $40.09 - USD $106.44 per year, with additional benefits, bonuses, and rewards based on individual impact.
