Medical Assistant Position Overview
GI Alliance is seeking an experienced Medical Assistant I to join our team. This role involves both clinical and administrative duties, supporting physicians in patient care and managing essential clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. The primary goal is to provide patients with the information they need to fully utilize and benefit from our clinical services.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Clinical Duties:
- Assist physicians with patient care, including checking schedules, managing patient flow, and escorting patients to exam/procedure rooms.
- Support patients with mobility, transfers, dressing, specimen collection, and preparation for examinations.
- Gather patient history, take vital signs, and perform screenings as per provider guidelines.
- Assist providers during procedures, document patient interactions (charting), and handle phone triage.
- Administer medications and relay instructions to patients and families.
- Verify prescriptions with physician orders.
- Answer calls and provide necessary information to patients.
Clerical Duties:
- Manage patient medical records, including sending and receiving records, and obtaining necessary reports (lab, X-ray, hospital notes, referrals).
- Complete forms and requisitions accurately.
- Schedule patient appointments and manage patient check-in and check-out processes.
- Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
- Update and maintain patient charts, ensuring all information is complete and filed correctly.
Organizational Duties:
- Respect and promote patient rights.
- Respond appropriately to emergency codes.
- Communicate patient and staff-related issues to immediate supervisors.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or GED, a medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution, or relevant college coursework in medical assisting.
- Experience: A minimum of one year of recent experience in a medical facility as a medical assistant or documented evidence of a completed externship in a medical office. Experience in a Gastroenterology practice is preferred.
- Level I Status: Entry-level (1-4 years experience) with potential need for additional supervision, or over 4 years of experience while still meeting basic job requirements with a need for supervision.
