Job Summary

The Engineer - Central NDT focuses on performing tests, such as non-destructive testing (NDT), and defining controls like Statistical Process Control (SPC). This role ensures correct alignment with quality requirements, verifying that manufactured or purchased products meet specified standards before advancing to the next production phase or customer delivery. The individual is responsible for the quality of their work, typically operating under direct functional supervision and system verification. Work is executed within a well-defined framework of enabling functions, following a detailed sequence of standard tasks to achieve final results.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities for the Engineer - Central NDT include:

  • Competency Development & Resource Adequacy:
    • Act as a safety ambassador, promoting safety culture and a friendly environment.
    • Improve the skill level of NDT technicians in Blade manufacturing plants through focused education and feedback mechanisms.
    • Consistently focus on improving the competence level of NDT technicians to allow for a highly flexible workforce in the plants.
    • Learn and adopt new areas of expertise such as Crawler, Geometrical verification methods, and QC inspections.
  • Measurement And Inspection Methods:
    • Periodically audit processes and procedures to bridge gaps that could lead to misinterpretation and quality issues.
    • Test and validate new NDT methods and tools to ensure continuous improvement of processes.
    • Actively participate in Gemba walks and provide practical support to improve UT data quality and consistency in decision-making.
    • Develop and implement Poka-Yoke solutions in inspection and measurement processes.
    • Execute and implement new inspection methods, geometrical verification methods, new technologies, and new Acceptance Criteria.
  • Quality Compliance:
    • Demonstrate and cultivate a quality culture at all times.
    • Maintain a proactive approach to ensuring process compliance before failures occur.
    • Execute NDT process audits, NDT personnel reviews, and periodic data as per defined frequency.
    • Monitor inspection effectiveness, support Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) closure with stakeholders.
    • Follow up on audit finding closures.
    • Actively participate in RCA for recurring defects to improve product quality.
    • Maintain all quality records and documents up-to-date.
  • Operational Process And Support:
    • Demonstrate a ONE TEAM mindset within and outside the team.
    • Execute on-time NDT data analysis with clear records provided to manufacturing plants for smooth operations.
    • Provide timely and effective feedback to the NDT team in the plants based on identified gaps.
    • Monitor the quality of NDT data and support plants in continuous improvement.
    • Own defined KPIs and strive to achieve targets consistently.
    • Support technology projects, new product launches, and quality issue projects from a technical standpoint.
    • Track, monitor, and improve the performance of gauge R&R in plants.
    • Assure effective implementation of calibration processes in relevant inspection methods.
    • Provide training and implement new Acceptance Criteria and other relevant procedures.
    • Focus on continuous improvement of inspection lists, Acceptance Criteria, and all relevant NDT procedures.
    • Provide on-time support to manufacturing plants for daily operational challenges related to NDT processes.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or an equivalent technical or associate degree.
  • Certified level 2 in conventional B-SCAN and advanced Phased Array methods (PAUT).
  • Certified in IR inspection methods.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of work experience in Manufacturing, preferably in blade manufacturing with UT inspections.
  • International experience and cultural awareness covering Americas, Europe, India, and China.
  • Knowledge of blade manufacturing is preferable.
  • Understanding and knowledge of Quality tools, Problem-solving techniques, Systems and Processes, Audits, PFMEA, and Control plans.
  • Good English language skills (verbal and writing).
  • Preferably possess an ISO 9001 internal auditor certification and relevant audit experience.
  • Flexible traveling across LM/GE business units for executing training and operational support.
