Definition

Under general supervision, provides special education services to students identified as disabled in accordance with State and Federal regulations. Work involves developing and implementing the Individualized Education Program (IEP) in classroom settings that are compatible with the student’s age and developmental level. The EC Teacher - General Curriculum is responsible for developing lesson plans, adapting materials, and designing activities to assist EC students in developing appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills and to meet their IEP goals. The teacher is also responsible for monitoring student progress and maintaining EC records in compliance with State and Federal guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and present instruction tailored for students with disabilities.
  • Develop and implement instructional plans aligned with school curricula and IEPs.
  • Create and update IEPs using assessments and diagnostic information.
  • Provide direct special education instruction and employ varied teaching methods.
  • Monitor, deescalate behaviors, and maintain classroom discipline.
  • Assist students with personal and self-help needs.
  • Communicate with parents regarding student progress via reports.
  • Serve as a case coordinator and collaborate with caregivers and support professionals.
  • Maintain student records according to state and federal guidelines.
  • Demonstrate professional growth via continuous development activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of educational laws, special education regulations, instructional methodologies, and various disabilities is essential. The role requires the ability to design individualized instruction, assess students, maintain records, and operate classroom tools and technology. Effective communication, organization, and the ability to motivate and adapt under stress are also necessary.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to use standard classroom equipment and occasionally exert physical effort up to defined limits. The role involves standing, walking, and occasionally lifting to support student needs.

Minimum Training and Experience

Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from an accredited institution. Must be licensed in Special Education/General Curriculum (88091) or eligible for licensure.
