About the role
Racialized Freelance Journalist Fellow
Future of Good is seeking a talented racialized freelance journalist to join us as a fellow. This role involves producing high-impact, solutions-focused stories on systemic inequities and the advancements in diversity, equity, and inclusion across Canada. The fellowship is designed to provide mentorship, professional development, and a platform to publish deeply reported work for a national Canadian audience.
About the Fellowship
This fellowship aims to deepen public understanding of inequities in Canada while highlighting innovative solutions. Reporting will be trauma-informed, anti-colonial, justice-focused, and community-grounded. The work is financially supported by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF), though the CRRF has no editorial involvement.
From June 2026 to March 2027, the fellow is expected to complete:
- 15 evergreen, feature-length stories (1,500-1,800 words each)
- Two virtual panel discussions based on their work, with Future of Good's editorial support.
Key focus areas, always with a solutions-focused lens, include:
- Racial & Ethnic Disparities: Systemic racism's impact on Indigenous, Black, and other racialized communities.
- Newcomers & Refugees: Integration challenges and community-led solutions.
- Indigenous Rights: Land rights, cultural preservation, and colonial impacts.
- Gender Equity: Barriers to parity and advancements in gender justice.
- Economic Inequities: Policies affecting underserved communities.
The fellow will also participate in a peer cohort led by Journalists for Human Rights (JHR), including monthly check-ins and group discussions.
About You
The ideal candidate is:
- A racialized journalist (identifying as Black, Indigenous, or other racialized identity) living and working in Canada.
- A Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- A prolific reporter with experience covering inequities, community issues, or social change.
- Skilled in interviewing, research, and narrative storytelling, applying a trauma-informed, anti-colonial lens.
- Curious, kind, and compassionate, with a strong connection to the communities they report on.
- Experienced in multi-media storytelling and hosting.
- Able to manage their time effectively and meet deadlines.
