Job Description

Purpose and Scope

The Per Diem Surgical Technologist supports Fresenius Medical Care North America's mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy. Adherence to the USV/FMCNA Compliance Program, including all regulatory and USV/FMS policy requirements, is essential.

Under the direct supervision of the Facility Manager or Chief Radiology Technologist, the role involves performing scrub and circulating duties during interventional procedures in accordance with USV/FMS policies and procedures. This includes assisting with the preparation of the procedure room, managing inventory, and stocking supplies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with the maintenance and setting up of the procedure room, ensuring compliance with FMCNA/USV policies and procedures, and state/federal regulations.
  • Stocks the procedure room and trays with necessary supplies and interventional equipment before procedures.
  • Cleans the procedure room, including equipment and machinery, after procedures.
  • May assist with patient preparation for surgical procedures, including positioning, shaving, and prepping.
  • Performs additional tasks as designated by the Physician, always within the scope of practice and state regulations.
  • Prepares and administers medications according to scope of practice and state regulations.
  • Performs patient transfers and positioning, and transports patients to and from the procedure room.
  • Acts as scrub assistant, aiding the physician during interventional procedures under fluoroscopy, while maintaining sterile technique as per established company policies and state/federal regulations.
  • Draws up intravenous medication and labels it according to the Medication Labeling Policy and Sterile Field Competency.
  • Performs circulating duties within the procedure room.
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA policies and standards regarding patient confidentiality.
  • Assists in maintaining environmental integrity and aesthetics, ensuring all areas are clean, sanitary, and safe daily.
  • Inspects all facility equipment and instruments daily, before and after procedures, to ensure proper working condition.
  • May perform minor equipment repairs and general upkeep, communicating problems to the supervisor and documenting issues.
  • Assists with the disposal of hazardous waste materials, dirty linen, and rugs.
  • May assist with instrument sterilization and packaging of surgical instruments.
  • Helps prepare, organize, and efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage.
  • Provides outstanding quality of patient care by supporting USV quality standards, meeting regulatory requirements, and practicing Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) using USV/FMS CQI tools.
  • Assists with implementing USV quality goals and facility-specific action plans to achieve USV quality standards.
  • Maintains the integrity of medical records and other USV administrative and operational records.
  • Complies with all data collection and auditing activities.
  • Provides clerical and practical support to physicians and staff: works with physicians and staff to ensure all necessary instruments and equipment are on hand, may print images and send to the physician, may assist with training and orienting new employees on medical equipment, and files paperwork in patient files according to policies and procedures.
  • Assists with inventory, ordering, and re-stocking of supplies.
  • May process x-ray images after acquisitions and archive patient images to a CD or DVD to comply with USV policies and procedures for patient medical records and state regulations.
  • Participates in all facility regulatory and accreditation surveys and action plans to address any identified deficiencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

The role involves desk and personal computer work, and interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians. The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility with temperature control and moderate noise levels, with potential exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials. The ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds, and stand in a protective apron for up to 45-60 minutes, is required.

Education

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Surgical Technologist Certification as required by state regulation.
  • All appropriate state licensure, certification education, and training (if any) required.

Experience and Required Skills

  • 1-2 years' related experience.
  • Previous patient care experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of interventional equipment (including C-Arm and Ultrasound equipment), procedures, and materials/supplies needed for each procedure.
  • Knowledge of sterile techniques.
  • Experience with special procedures utilizing a C-Arm preferred.
  • Knowledge of universal precautions and personal protective devices when operating radiology systems.
  • Successful completion of BLS certification.
