Role Description: Staff Materials Engineer

Form Energy is seeking a Staff Materials Engineer to lead the Air Electrode Assembly Materials Design Team. This pivotal role involves engineering the Air Cathode in our first-of-kind Iron-Air Battery and reports to the Manager of Air Electrode Engineering. As part of our Air Electrode Engineering Team, you will characterize, test, and create specifications for new electrode materials and processes. This will be done in close collaboration with our Mechanical Engineering, Supply Chain, Research & Development, Manufacturing, and Cell Engineering teams. Together, we are responsible for designing, developing, and scaling cutting-edge electrode designs for Form Energy’s Iron-Air multi-day battery. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and be part of the growth of a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission!

Relocation assistance is available for this position.

What You'll Do

  • Prioritize safety across the entire electrode lifecycle, from initial design and implementation through battery testing and post-test analysis.
  • Lead cross-functional project teams to innovate and scale revolutionary air electrode materials, designs, and manufacturing processes.
  • Establish material specifications for electrode components by mapping fundamental material properties to product performance and failure mechanisms.
  • Design and execute complex electrochemical and non-electrochemical experiments to provide data-driven insights for production-level design decisions.
  • Coordinate material characterization efforts (pre- and post-test) in partnership with internal experts and external vendors, developing novel techniques as required.
  • Mentor and champion the growth of junior team members, leveraging deep technical expertise to provide guidance and career support.

What You'll Bring

  • 7+ years of experience in materials engineering (or related field) with a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or Materials-focused Mechanical Engineering.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with a proven ability to distill complex technical data for audiences ranging from executive leadership to engineering teams.
  • Expertise in root cause analysis and structured problem-solving, maintaining a "big picture" perspective while navigating deep technical hurdles.
  • Data proficiency with experimental design (DOE) and statistical analysis software such as JMP or Minitab.
  • Proven track record in supplier relationship management and operational oversight to ensure material quality and availability.
  • Adaptability and mobility, including the ability to travel (approximately 20%).
