Job Summary
The Tooling Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing composite molds and assembly fixtures for prototyping activities within the design engineering department at Footprint. This role involves designing and sourcing master plugs or molds, managing the fabrication of mold framework and components, and ensuring that tooling supports on-time, on-budget prototype fabrication.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in design and development of complex tooling solutions for sustainable packaging products.
- Utilize CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) to create detailed 2D and 3D models.
- Conduct FEA and simulations to validate tooling performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product design, manufacturing, and quality.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive tooling documentation including specifications and test reports.
- Evaluate and select materials and manufacturing processes for tooling fabrication.
- Identify opportunities for tooling optimization and standardization to reduce costs.
- Stay abreast of industry best practices and emerging tooling technologies.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the manager.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, with 3+ years of proven experience in tooling design. Must have a strong understanding of CAD software (SolidWorks preferred), FEA tools, manufacturing processes such as injection molding, thermoforming, and die cutting, as well as knowledge of tooling materials and their properties. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with sustainable materials and manufacturing practices.
- Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
- Experience with GD&T and tolerance analysis.
- Project management experience.
