About The Role

The Sr. Food Scientist at Tandem Foods will play a pivotal role in driving product innovation and supporting manufacturing processes. This position requires a technically skilled and creative individual capable of leading formulation and processing initiatives for new customer projects across multiple plants. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in food science, with the ability to work confidently in a production environment, troubleshooting formulation and process challenges while maintaining safety and cost considerations. The Sr. Food Scientist will serve as a key technical resource, collaborating with cross-functional teams including R&D, Sales, Operations, Food Safety, and Quality Assurance to develop and refine products that meet customer specifications and company standards. A significant focus will be on owning new product pipeline projects, building customer relationships, and translating innovative ideas into stable, market-ready products.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or a related science-based field.
  • 5-8 years of experience in product development, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
  • Deep understanding of food formulation, ingredient functionality, and processing technologies.
  • Proven ability to develop protein bars, baked goods, confections, or similar products.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, capable of building relationships internally and externally.
  • Strong knowledge of the food industry, regulatory requirements (FDA, etc.), and safety standards.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of Genesis formulation software.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and prioritization skills.
  • Willingness to travel to manufacturing sites and customer locations as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Lead formulation development and provide processing support for both new and existing customer projects across multiple manufacturing sites.
  • Act as the technical expert in R&D to support the commercialization process and ongoing plant operations.
  • Troubleshoot formulation and process challenges, ensuring solutions are safe, cost-effective, and timely.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Operations, Food Safety, and Quality teams to align technical solutions with business objectives.
  • Engage with customers to understand their needs, ensure product expectations are met, and foster strong relationships.
  • Plan, execute, and analyze plant trials, documenting results and learnings comprehensively.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation including formulations, test results, and project updates.
  • Interact with ingredient suppliers to onboard new raw materials and troubleshoot formulation issues.
  • Innovate by creating new snack products utilizing Genesis as a formulation tool and presenting concepts to sales teams for customer pitches.
  • Stay informed on new ingredient developments, processing techniques, and equipment innovations to enhance project outcomes.
  • Participate in sensory evaluations to guide product development decisions, including ingredient and finished product tasting without dietary restrictions.
