About The Role
The Foreign Language Specialist role within the U.S. Army Reserves offers a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about languages and cultural immersion. As a Foreign Language Specialist, you will assist the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in acquiring and honing language skills in your chosen language of destination. The position involves immersive training that emphasizes speaking, listening, and reading in the target language, with a strong cultural component to deepen understanding of regional nuances. Upon successful completion of the linguistic training at DLI, candidates become eligible for an associate degree in foreign language studies. The role also prepares specialists for advanced military training in fields such as 35M or 35P, which are critical for intelligence and communications operations within the military framework. Qualifications
To be considered for the Foreign Language Specialist position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Between the ages of 17 and 34
- Possess a high school diploma or GED
- Adhere to regulations regarding tattoos
- Have no serious legal infractions
- Be free from significant medical issues
Additional requirements include passing specific tests and certifications to qualify for language training and military service. Candidates must complete 10 weeks of Basic Training and achieve a minimum score of 85 or higher on the Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) if on active service. Alternatively, a score of 129 or more on the Skilled Technical (ST) section of the ASVAB can exempt candidates from the DLAB. For those not yet proficient in a foreign language, the program includes 36 to 64 weeks of specialized education at DLI to develop language skills necessary for military operations.
Responsibilities
As a Foreign Language Specialist, your responsibilities will include:
- Participating actively in language training programs to develop proficiency in speaking, listening, and reading
- Engaging in cultural immersion activities to understand regional customs and traditions
- Assisting in the collection and analysis of intelligence information through language skills
- Supporting military operations by providing accurate translation and interpretation services
- Completing all required training modules and certifications to advance in your military career
- Collaborating with team members and instructors to enhance language acquisition and cultural understanding
- Preparing for and attending advanced individual training in military occupational specialties such as 35M or 35P
