Job Description
A.I. Learning Counsel at Fasken
Reporting to the Senior Director, Learning & Development, the A.I. Learning Counsel will lead the design, development, and implementation of the firm’s artificial intelligence (A.I.) training and adoption programs for legal and business professionals across Fasken’s Canadian Regions, London, and Johannesburg offices. This role is integral to the firm’s cross-departmental AI team, collaborating with Knowledge and Practice Innovation (KMPI) and Information Technology (IT) to align AI training with Fasken’s strategic goals and annual business objectives.
Primary internal clients include lawyers, legal students, legal administrative staff, Human Resources, and other business administrative staff.
Primary Responsibilities
Strategy & Program Development
- Collaborate with the Senior Director, Learning and Development, to design, develop, and implement a multi-year A.I. learning strategy aligned with the firm’s talent and innovation goals.
- Identify A.I. learning needs across practice groups, business services, and leadership in conjunction with AI experts from KMPI and IT.
- Develop and maintain a firm-wide A.I. curriculum, covering foundational literacy to advanced, practice-specific applications.
- Stay abreast of emerging A.I. learning trends and assess their impact on the firm.
- Attend KMPI and IT meetings on A.I., updating firm documents, procedures, and processes to incorporate changes into A.I. training.
Learning Execution & Delivery
- Create and oversee the facilitation of engaging training programs (live workshops, e-learning, certifications, on-demand modules) on A.I. concepts, tools, and use cases in legal practice.
- Partner with Knowledge Management to integrate A.I. into Learning & Development materials for lawyers and staff.
- Develop A.I. skills programs tailored for Fasken’s legal professionals, including summer articling students, articling students, paralegals, associates, partners, and business professional roles.
- Design A.I. learning journeys for various firm members such as legal assistants, marketing, business development, finance, and IT professionals.
- Collaborate with KMPI and IT on, and contribute to, the Firm’s AI Collective initiatives to build internal expertise and mentorship capacity.
- Oversee and contribute to the development and maintenance of relevant A.I. learning resources and materials.
- Maintain technical competence in supported software and A.I. applications, staying updated on new technologies.
Adoption, Risk & Change Management
- Promote responsible A.I. use, adhering to firm policies, client expectations, and professional obligations.
- Support change management by equipping lawyers and staff with necessary skills, tools, and confidence for A.I. adoption.
- Monitor adoption metrics, learning outcomes, and feedback with KMPI and IT to refine programming and measure ROI.
- Maintain learning records, reports, evaluations, and continuously work towards A.I. learning maturity.
Collaboration & Thought Leadership
- Contribute to thought leadership content (articles, presentations, webinars) in coordination with KMPI to showcase the firm’s A.I. expertise.
- Collaborate with lawyers, legal teams, and KMPI to identify opportunities for implementing learning technology solutions.
- Work with KMPI and key stakeholders on all aspects of A.I. skills training.
- Undertake projects and other assigned duties.
Required Knowledge And Experience
- J.D./LL.B. and member in good standing with a Canadian law society.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience practicing law, with exposure to legal technology, knowledge management, or innovation initiatives.
- Proven experience designing and delivering legal training or professional development programs.
- Strong understanding of emerging A.I. technologies in legal practice (e.g., generative A.I., contract review, legal research, analytics).
- French/Bilingual language skills is an asset.
- Strong foundation in instructional and learning design, with experience developing effective training solutions.
- Experience with learning technologies, including Learning Management Systems (LMS) and digital learning tools, as well as familiarity with Microsoft Copilot.
- Experience delivering training both in-person and virtually, adapting content to diverse learning styles.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across regions and functions.
- Understanding of change management principles and the ability to support stakeholders through change.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and multitasking skills in a dynamic environment.
