Job Description

Subject Matter Expert - IT/Artificial Intelligence at Excelsior University

Excelsior University is actively seeking Subject Matter Experts (SME) on a contractual basis to bolster its individual course development initiatives. This pivotal role requires an individual with advanced knowledge and profound expertise in computer science and Artificial Intelligence.

Courses targeted for development or revision include critical areas such as:

  • Machine Learning Foundations: Responsible AI Development
  • Natural Language Processing and Emerging Applications
  • Visionary Machines: Exploring Computer Vision Technologies
  • Responsible AI: Neural Networks and Deep Learning
  • Ethics, Society, and Law in AI

Reporting directly to the Department Chair, the Subject Matter Expert plays an instrumental role in shaping the design and revision of course content. You will collaborate closely with the Department Chair, Learning Experience Designer, and various university staff throughout the course development lifecycle, which typically spans approximately 20 weeks (4.5 months), excluding university onboarding and compliance training.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Update existing courses or design new ones based on program needs, incorporating foundational knowledge, emerging practices, and disciplinary advancements.
  • Ensure all course development aligns seamlessly with defined course and program learning outcomes.
  • Identify and curate relevant learning resources and high-quality content.
  • Craft engaging learning activities, assignments, and robust, valid assessments of learning.
  • Guarantee that the course curriculum adheres to Excelsior’s core justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) principles.
  • Commit to consistent availability throughout the agreed-upon course development timeline and diligently meet all project deadlines.
  • Actively participate in weekly or bi-weekly course development meetings.
  • Foster strong collaboration with the course development team across the entire design process.
  • Utilize the Excelsior University course shell as the foundational framework for course construction.
  • Author lectures, assignments, and rubrics, providing original content in an editable format.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, individuals must effectively perform all essential duties. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • An earned doctorate, or a master's degree combined with significant professional experience in computer science, Data Science, or a related field relevant to supporting the program and its courses.
  • Demonstrated significant industry and/or professional experience within the field of Artificial Intelligence.
  • Prior teaching experience at a two- or four-year degree-granting institution in computer science or a related field is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the processes of curriculum development and implementation, specifically within computer science or related training programs.

Remote Work Information

Please note for remote applicants: Excelsior University is required to withhold New York state income taxes from your wages, as well as applicable state income tax in your state of residence. This is due to New York’s “convenience of the employer” rule, which mandates that the University, as a New York employer, withhold New York income tax from wages of employees working outside New York if the work is performed for the employee's convenience rather than a business necessity of the University.
