About the role

Head of Artificial Intelligence Division (AI)

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is seeking a Head of Artificial Intelligence Division to lead and scale AI capabilities across the Group. This role is based at our Luxembourg headquarters and requires regular office presence. The EIB offers a permanent contract at grade 7 and relocation support for successful candidates.

Purpose of the Role

As the Head of Artificial Intelligence, you will define and execute the Group’s AI strategy, build and operate the Group AI Hub, and drive the adoption of AI solutions. You will ensure the secure, compliant, and ethical use of AI, transforming business ambitions into a scalable AI ecosystem. This role is ideal for a technology leader who can bridge AI vision with practical delivery and is passionate about responsible AI development.

Operating Network

The Artificial Intelligence Division is responsible for designing, building, and operating the Group’s AI capabilities, including platforms, engineering frameworks, model lifecycle management, and enabling services. The Division works closely with business and IT stakeholders to ensure AI solutions are secure, compliant, scalable, and aligned with enterprise architecture and regulatory requirements. You will report to the Head of the Digital Transformation & Innovation Department.

Accountabilities

  • Define and lead the EIB Group’s AI strategy, aligning AI with business priorities and digital ambitions.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the Division, fostering a culture of learning and knowledge sharing.
  • Build, scale, and operate the Group AI Hub, establishing enterprise AI platforms for large-scale adoption.
  • Drive AI-enabled transformation by partnering with stakeholders to embed AI into core processes.
  • Ensure trusted and responsible AI by embedding security, ethical principles, and regulatory compliance.
  • Advance AI maturity by leveraging data as a strategic asset for enterprise-level intelligence.
  • Build and lead a high-performing, multidisciplinary AI organization, developing talent and capabilities.
  • Represent the AI Division internally and externally, contributing to governance and shaping the Group's AI ecosystem position.
  • Manage vendors, partners, and procurement in the AI domain, ensuring value and compliance.
  • Monitor AI technology trends, scaling team capabilities and tooling to maintain a forefront position in AI innovation.

Qualifications

  • University degree (minimum Bachelor's equivalent) in computer science, AI, data science, engineering, or a related IT domain.
  • At least 10 years of progressive experience managing large-scale IT and digital initiatives, with exposure to AI, advanced analytics, or data platforms.
  • Proven ability to manage and coach people, ideally in multicultural or international environments.
  • Experience in implementing large-scale AI programs, including staff re-skilling and platform re-engineering.
  • Strong technical background in AI engineering and platforms (machine learning, generative AI, MLOps).
  • Good expertise in the modern AI landscape, including market standards, models, and enterprise-grade AI services.
  • Experience delivering secure, scalable, and resilient solutions in hybrid environments.
  • Solid business acumen, preferably in banking or financial services, with the ability to translate business needs into AI solutions.
  • Strong leadership and change management skills, with a proven track record in driving technology adoption.
  • Excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of other EU languages is an advantage.
