We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Controller to join our Accounting department. The Controller will play a critical role in managing the financial health of the organization by overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance functions. This position requires a strategic thinker with a strong background in financial management within a professional services environment. This role is located in Austin, Texas and has a flexible hybrid work schedule.
Responsibilities
Financial Operations
- Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable processes for project-based invoicing and expense tracking, ensuring timely collections, accurate cost allocation, and compliance with company standards
- Maintain accurate financial records, including the chart of accounts, journal entries, and an organized filing system to support audits and ensure transparency
- Prepare and issue financial statements
- Coordinate with external accountants for annual audits and tax filings in compliance with industry-specific regulations
- Monitor cash flow to ensure accurate tracking and reporting of financial activities
- Oversee payroll operations and related payroll system administration
Internal Controls and Compliance
- Establish, implement, and enforce internal controls to safeguard company assets, particularly for project-related financial activities
- Monitor taxation compliance and regulatory changes, advising on necessary adjustments to maintain compliance
- Review financial and insurance aspects of project contracts, client agreements, and leases, identifying risks and ensuring favorable terms for the firm
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business field
- 7+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, preferably within professional services or project-based industries
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and analysis
- Proficiency in enterprise accounting and project management software, preferably with Deltek Ajera
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Proven experience establishing and enforcing internal controls
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with leadership and cross-functional teams
Desired Qualifications
- CPA, CMA, or equivalent certification
- Experience in the engineering, construction, or MEP consulting industry
- Familiarity with project-based accounting and cost allocation
- Knowledge of automated financial systems and tools
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing accounting teams
- Experience in reviewing and managing financial aspects of contracts and client agreements
