Job Description

About Divergent

Divergent is a technology company that has architected, invented, built, and commercialized an end-to-end factory system called the Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAPS) that comprehensively uses machine learning to optimally engineer, additively manufacture, and flexibly assemble complex integrated vehicle structures and subsystems. Products created using DAPS are superior in performance, lower in cost, rapidly customizable to meet mission and customer-specific requirements, faster to market, and scalable on demand to high volume production. Divergent is a qualified Tier 1 supplier to global automotive OEMs, and Divergent is now expanding to support mission critical needs in the Aerospace and Defense sector. Join us to be a part of this transformative journey, where your impact will shape the future of technology and production.

Purpose of the Role

Divergent aims to revolutionize industrial manufacturing in the aerospace and defense industries through our DAPS (Divergent Adaptive Production System) technology. Our patented production system incorporates Nodes™ – 3D-printed metal connectors – with lightweight materials to create strong and efficient complex structures. Divergent’s technology eliminates tooling and drives radical innovation, capital reduction, and sustainability in vehicle manufacturing.

Divergent is seeking a skilled and motivated engineer to support the next generation of industry-leading aerospace vehicle development. We’re committed to transforming powertrain components away from traditional manufacturing by using new materials and new technologies. To do this, we need a forward-looking and innovative engineer who will help shape the future of powerplant and power transmission design.

The Senior Powertrain Engineer will be responsible for product development, from program kick-off to start of production. You are accountable for trade studies of initial concepts through the final released design of a system, incorporating design elements like valves, gears, shafts, airfoils, bearings and lubrication systems based upon parametric analysis. You will deliver detailed designs substantiated with FEA models and simulation for rotating components, gear trains and lubrication systems. Finally, you will supervise the testing and qualification of the powertrain system. You must collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand manufacturing/design capabilities and limitations and to ensure proposed design changes can be efficiently produced and assembled. You will also act as technical liaison between Divergent and its customers and suppliers, to ensure product requirements are concurred, tracked and achieved.

Key Responsibilities of a Senior Powertrain Engineer

  • Create and evaluate powertrain conceptual (layout) designs.
  • Create and manage CAD designs of powertrain components, including gears, shafts, bearings and lubrication elements.
  • Build up and analyze FE Models of gears, shafts, bearings and gearbox lubrication systems.
  • Design geartrain components for manufacturability.
  • Present design summary/reports efficiently at meetings and to other relevant engineers or external parties.
  • Create, refine, and execute new technical solutions for aerospace structures to support external customer programs and joint development efforts.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment within the DAPS Product Engineering team and cross-functionally with other disciplines to efficiently design and release gearbox structures that are optimized for mass, efficient production, and assembly.
  • Work cross-functionally to implement cost reduction, methods and product improvements, and support prototype and production build activities.
  • Maintain technical documentation, including best practices and lesson learned.
  • Support vehicle builds and product development testing and troubleshooting.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to US export controls.
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in powertrain design.
  • CAD experience creating detailed models. Siemens NX is a plus.
  • PLM experience. Teamcenter is a plus.
  • Experience in gear analysis. MASTA and Transmission3D are a plus.
  • Experience in analysis software packages such as FLOWNEX and LDP.
  • Experience with aerospace load applications and AGMA or ISO gear and bearing standards.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and motivated self-starter who can manage personal workload and execution to tight schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience interfacing with engineering, testing, and manufacturing groups to understand system designs and the associated constraints.
  • Experience with powertrain layout, including trade studies to optimize volume and weight.
  • Knowledge of overall vehicle systems/sub-systems and requirements.
  • Experience supporting analysis and completing documentation for product approval and launch.
  • Experience supporting powertrain design and analysis throughout the design, build, and test phases of a development cycle.
  • Experience with qualifying powertrains for flight with DoD or FAA.
  • Experience managing system configurations and managing changes to size, weight, and cost constraints.
  • Supported or engaged directly with DoD airworthiness stakeholders such as Air Force Test Center (AFTC) or FAA.

Work Environment & Benefits

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards.

Divergent offers a holistic compensation package including a competitive salary (Pay Range: $141,380 USD - $194,390 USD), equity plan, and results-based incentive bonuses. Benefits include paid vacation, sick time, company holidays, year-end shutdown, paid parental leave, comprehensive health and wellness benefits (HMO & Premium PPO options), company-sponsored life insurance, and short and long-term disability coverage. Divergent invests in employee growth through learning and development reimbursement opportunities within a collaborative, dynamic, and high-performing team environment.
