About This Role
The Assistant Manager Aboriginal Separations provides internal oversight over Aboriginal people across the adult prison system who are separated from other people in custody. This is an ongoing, full-time opportunity within the Department of Justice and Community Safety, Victoria, offering a salary of $113,022 - $136,747 plus superannuation. This is a prioritised role for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, who will receive priority consideration as per the special measures provision of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
About The Business Unit
Corrections Victoria (CV) manages Victoria's adult prison system, focusing on safe and secure containment, rehabilitation programs, and services. It operates 12 public prisons, one transition centre, and oversees privately operated prisons. CV implements best practice interventions to reduce reoffending, including case management, offence-specific programs, and reintegration supports.
The Workforce and Aboriginal Outcomes division leads the development and monitoring of CV policies and programs aimed at reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal people in the Victorian correctional system. This division includes Cultural Review and Workforce Strategy, Naalamba Ganbu and Nerrlinggu Yilam, and Aboriginal Operational Strategic Supports.
About The Role
This position is part of the Naalamba Ganbu and Nerrlinggu Yilam team, which is dedicated to designing, developing, implementing, and monitoring CV policies and services to reduce the over-representation of Aboriginal people in corrections. The team collaborates with the Victorian Aboriginal community, agencies, and CV staff to understand and address the needs of Aboriginal people in the correctional system, guided by its motto: 'Our People, Our Priority, Our Pride.'
As an Assistant Manager Aboriginal Separations, you will work closely with the Aboriginal community, sentence management staff, and prison personnel. You will provide expert advice on the management of Aboriginal people in prolonged separation and coordinate the implementation of culturally appropriate supports, driving necessary change. You will join a culturally strong, supportive, and collaborative team, benefiting from opportunities to engage in the Department of Justice and Community Safety Aboriginal Staff Network activities, including the annual state-wide conference, and receive cultural and professional development support.

Some Of Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Manage direct reports, including work item allocation, oversight, and performance development planning and reviews.
- Prepare high-quality advice, reports, and briefings for senior management to inform culturally sensitive decisions impacting Aboriginal people in long-term separation.
- Contribute to the review and update of departmental policy, Local Operating Procedures (LOPs), and Commissioner Requirements (CRs).
About You
To succeed as an Assistant Manager Aboriginal Separations, you should possess:
- Strong knowledge of Corrections Victoria policies, organisational structure, procedures, and relevant legislation and regulations.
- Demonstrated understanding of the Aboriginal community, its society, culture, and the issues affecting it.
- Proven ability to communicate sensitively and work effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
- Extensive experience in providing high-quality advice, reports, and briefings to senior management.
