Job Description

Senior Web and Visual Design Lead

Are you the person who makes “reliable and always available” a reality in your work? At Deer Designer, you'll lead a team of designers, ensure consistent quality across multiple brands, and manage timely delivery without burning out your team. This is a player-coach role where you will direct, review, unblock, and contribute designs when critical.

What You’ll Own (Outcomes)

  • Quality consistency at scale: Every deliverable meets brand standards and feels intentional.
  • On-time delivery: Clear priorities and realistic deadlines ensure predictable team output.
  • Team performance: Designers are productive, developing, and supported.
  • Client confidence: Clients perceive you as a dedicated Senior Web & Visual Designer and leader.

Responsibilities

1. Creative Leadership and Direction

  • Set and maintain creative standards for the team, including layout, typography, motion, brand fit, and polish.
  • Translate complex briefs into clear, actionable direction for designers.
  • Establish reusable systems such as templates, component libraries, brand kits, and best-practice examples.

2. Quality Control (Without becoming a bottleneck)

  • Review work before delivery to catch obvious errors and subtle quality issues.
  • Coach designers through feedback to foster continuous quality improvement.
  • Define and communicate the standard of “great” for each client and deliverable type.

3. Delivery Management inside the Team

  • Triage incoming requests, assessing complexity, urgency, dependencies, and risk.
  • Assign work effectively based on designer skill, bandwidth, and client context.
  • Expeditiously unblock work by addressing missing assets, unclear scope, conflicting feedback, or shifting priorities.
  • Communicate risks early and propose solutions like scope adjustments or phased delivery.

4. Client-Facing Collaboration (Light, but high impact)

  • Participate in key client calls such as onboarding, brand alignment, escalations, and reviews.
  • Proactively identify and resolve gaps in brand consistency, guidelines, or recurring requests.
  • Transform client feedback into system improvements rather than endless revisions.

5. Team Leadership and Coaching

  • Lead weekly team syncs to discuss wins, blockers, priorities, and improvements.
  • Facilitate feedback loops through 1:1 coaching, skill development plans, and targeted training.
  • Maintain team morale and momentum while upholding high standards.

6. Process and Continuous Improvement

  • Enhance briefing quality through improved questions, examples, and guardrails.
  • Identify and resolve recurring friction points in briefs, QA, or tools.
  • Collaborate with production and customer success on workflows, expectations, and escalation paths.

What You’ll Work On

  • Web and landing page design (Figma)
  • Marketing assets (ads, social, email, lead magnets)
  • Brand systems (guidelines, templates, kits)
  • Pitch decks and presentations
  • Light motion direction

What “Great” Looks Like (Success Metrics)

  • High QA pass rate and fewer client revisions for “avoidable” issues.
  • Predictable turnaround times and fewer late deliveries.
  • Higher client satisfaction scores and fewer escalations.
  • Month-over-month designer improvement in quality and speed.
  • Strong system reuse, reducing repeat work.

Requirements

Must-haves:

  • 5+ years in design, with 1–3+ years leading creatives (agency, subscription, or in-house).
  • Technical Fluency: Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), Figma, and Canva.
  • Strong English communication skills (spoken and written).
  • Excellent art direction skills: brand judgment, typography, composition.
  • Reviewer Mindset: Provide specific, actionable, and fast feedback.
  • Calm Operator Energy: Maintain high quality under pressure and manage multiple brands/projects.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience in design subscriptions, high-volume studios, or production environments.
  • Motion/video direction experience (After Effects, Premiere, etc.).
  • Experience building scalable design systems or brand kits.
  • Familiarity with project tools like Trello, Asana, or Jira.

Benefits

Compensation & Perks

  • Monthly Rate: $1,100-2,000 USD (negotiable).
  • Paid Time Off: 15 PTO days + 10 unpaid days + 2 sick days (after 6 months).
