Job Description
Fullstack Software Engineer at DeepL
DeepL is a global AI product and research company focused on building secure, intelligent solutions to complex business problems. Over 200,000 business customers and millions of individuals across 228 global markets today trust DeepL's Language AI platform for human-like translation, improved writing and real-time voice translation. Founded in 2017, DeepL now has over 1,000 passionate employees and is supported by world-renowned investors including Benchmark, IVP, and Index Ventures.
Our goal is to become the global leader in trusted, intelligent AI technology, building products that drive better communication, foster connections, and create a meaningful impact. We are a team of innovators, researchers, and creators driven by a shared purpose to unlock human potential by making work simpler, smarter, and more connected. Being part of DeepL means joining a team dedicated to innovation, growth, and well-being, utilizing technology that helps millions of people and businesses communicate and work better every day.
Meet the Expert Editor Team
Our journey is built on DeepL’s reputation for world-class translation quality. At the heart of this next chapter is the Expert Editor team, focused on extending and enriching the capabilities of DeepL’s core translation experience. The mission of the Expert Editor team is to design and build a sophisticated editing platform that expands upon our existing translator. This product enables granular, segment-level control over translations and supports a broad range of input formats, including plain text, documents, audio, and video. By doing so, we empower users to adapt translations with precision, flexibility, and confidence across diverse use cases.
We work closely with cross-functional partners across Workflows, Core Editor, Customisation, and Research, collaborating to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions. Success in this team relies on strong communication, thoughtful planning, effective prioritisation, and a high degree of team fluidity. We value end-to-end ownership and teamwork, always striving to win together while maintaining the quality standards that define DeepL. The Expert Editor is a pivotal platform for the future of translation at DeepL, enabling multiparty collaboration and serving as a foundation for advanced, collaborative, and enterprise-ready editing experiences.
Your Responsibilities
- Own features end-to-end: You'll independently deliver medium-complexity features from design through production, breaking down work effectively and meeting delivery expectations with minimal oversight.
- Drive customer impact: You'll ensure your work is relevant and maintainable, using data and stakeholder feedback to validate impact and suggest improvements that enhance user experience.
- Build PoCs to create certainty: When faced with ambiguous technical challenges, you'll prototype solutions and run experiments (A/B tests, gradual rollouts) to validate approaches before committing to full implementation.
- Challenge requirements proactively: You'll apply product and technical context to make better design decisions, questioning unclear requirements and confirming we're solving the right customer problems.
- Collaborate cross-functionally: You'll communicate clearly across teams, unblock others, and share knowledge through documentation that helps teammates understand and build on your work.
- Support and mentor others: You'll help engineers grow, engage constructively in team rituals, and identify opportunities to improve how the team delivers.
- Adapt to evolving priorities: You'll stay flexible as requirements shift, escalate risks early, and maintain momentum while learning new tools and patterns.
- Share operational responsibility: You'll participate in on-call rotations as needed, taking ownership of your code in production and debugging issues independently.
Qualities We Look For
- Product engineering mindset: You obsess about customer experience and solving real user problems. You balance pragmatism with technical rigor, asking "should we build this?" and connecting your work to measurable business outcomes.
- Comfort with ambiguity: You thrive when problems lack clear solutions. Rather than waiting for perfect clarity, you build PoCs and run experiments to create certainty and de-risk ambiguous projects.
- Willingness to take risks: You're eager to try new approaches and technologies, learning quickly from both successes and failures. You validate assumptions through experiments rather than building large solutions upfront.
- Solid engineering foundations: You write clean, maintainable code with strong testing practices. You use core tools and patterns independently, consistently delivering work with minimal issues.
- Collaborative communicator: You're a clear communicator and active listener who helps others succeed. You document your work effectively and contribute positively to team health through constructive feedback.
- Growth-oriented: You actively seek feedback, set development goals, and stay curious about industry advancements. You're open to learning new tools and technologies when the problem demands it.
What We Offer
- Diverse and internationally distributed team: Join a large, global community with people of more than 90 nationalities, based in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, the US, and Japan.
- Open communication, regular feedback: We value clear, honest communication, smooth collaboration, and direct, actionable feedback.
- Hybrid work, flexible hours: Enjoy a hybrid work schedule with team members coming into the office twice a week, balancing direct engagement with flexibility.
- Virtual Shares: Every employee receives Virtual Shares, linking your contribution directly to DeepL’s growth and rewarding you with a stake in our future.
- Regular in-person team events: Bond over vibrant local, business unit, new-joiner, and company-wide events.
- Monthly full-day hacking sessions: Participate in Hack Fridays to dive into projects you're passionate about and collaborate with other teams.
- 30 days of annual leave: Enjoy generous time off (excluding public holidays) and access to mental health resources.
- Competitive benefits: A benefits package tailored to your unique location, ensuring you feel supported every step of the way.
