Role Overview
The Analytical Scientist (Chemist) will lead physical and chemical testing in the R&D lab, ensuring quality, reproducibility, and performance of ingredients. The role reports directly to the Director of R&D at Epogee and operates exclusively within Epogee’s independent team even though the job is posted through David Protein’s channels.
Responsibilities
- Analytical Testing: Perform tests including melting point, acid value, compositional analysis, oxidation stability, volatiles, and color.
- Synthesize test batches to validate new suppliers and enhance manufacturability.
- Maintain and calibrate lab instrumentation with precision.
- Facilitate external testing at third-party quality labs.
- Method Development: Build and validate SOPs, and develop defensible techniques for regulatory support and product claims.
- Data Ownership: Ensure reproducible, traceable, and scientifically rigorous testing; maintain excellent documentation practices.
- Systems & Scale: Design systems for batch sampling, QC monitoring and continuous improvement.
- Strategic Contribution: Lead the Cradle-to-Customer quality program to enhance R&D, quality, and production performance.
Requirements
- B.S. or M.S. in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Food Science.
- 2+ years lab-based analytical testing experience.
- Proficiency with analytical instruments and method development for fats and oils chemistry.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to scientific rigor.
- Bonus: Experience with fats, oils, solvents, chemical synthesis, experimental design, and statistics.
Location & Work Arrangement
This is a full-time, in-person role based in New York City. Initial technical onboarding will occur at the satellite lab in Clemson, SC for approximately one year. Occasional travel required for technical training and production activities.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $80,000 – $120,000 commensurate with experience (estimated midpoint $100,000).
