Job Description
Virtual Reading Specialist at Crossover (Prequel)
You recognize the shift. The instant a student moves from guessing to reading with intention. They glance up and say, "I can do this." If that's the work you're drawn to every day, this is where you belong.
Prequel is a remote-first online school designed for actual progress, not time served. We're rethinking how students learn so they advance more quickly, engage meaningfully, and graduate with measurable confidence.
In most weeks, you'll deliver focused intervention sessions. In the remaining time, you'll facilitate brief motivation touchpoints that help students stay aligned and reach their goals. This position is ideal for people who value independence, rapid feedback, and visible results. It's not suited to anyone seeking a rigid framework or avoiding data-driven work.
If you're ready to help struggling readers achieve substantial progress—and you want the latitude to customize your methods for each learner—we'd welcome the opportunity to connect.
What You Will Be Doing
- Create and conduct virtual small-group and individual reading intervention sessions for students in grades 3–8
- Leverage reading assessment data to identify fluency and comprehension deficits and modify instruction in real time
- Adapt activities to accommodate multiple reading levels, including specialized support for dyslexia and similar reading challenges
- Monitor progress systematically and consistently, and apply that data to inform upcoming sessions
- Facilitate structured motivation touchpoints that cultivate confidence, resilience, and pride in development
What You Won't Be Doing
- Deliver large, whole-class instruction or lecture using a rigid curriculum
- Execute a pre-written program without responding to student needs and immediate feedback
- Serve as a passive "software supervisor" without substantive instruction and relationship-building
- Depend on superficial incentives that fail to foster enduring motivation
Virtual Reading Specialist Key Responsibilities
Take ownership of outcomes for grades 3–8—quantifiable improvements in fluency and comprehension—through personalized virtual interventions and motivational support that strengthens confidence.
Basic Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in education, literacy, or a closely related field
- Reading intervention certification or endorsement (e.g., Arizona Reading Specialist K-12 or equivalent state certification)
- Specialized training or certification in dyslexia intervention (or related structured literacy approaches)
- At least 2 years of experience delivering small-group or one-on-one reading interventions for students in grades 3–8
- Experience supporting students with dyslexia or related reading difficulties
- Ability to interpret progress monitoring data and use it to plan and adjust instruction
- Strong ability to engage and manage students in a virtual setting through clear, motivating communication
- Full-time availability during U.S. business hours (Monday–Friday; 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. PT)
