Role Summary: GI Technician

As a GI Technician at Cooper University Health Care, you will play a crucial role in supporting endoscopic procedures. Your responsibilities include preparing rooms and equipment, maintaining inventory, ensuring proper equipment function, and assisting physicians and nurses during procedures. You will also be responsible for the meticulous cleaning, disinfecting, and calibrating of endoscopic instruments according to manufacturer guidelines, ensuring patient safety and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare procedure rooms and equipment before endoscopic procedures and ensure thorough clean-up and sterilization afterward.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of equipment and supplies for all endoscopic procedures.
  • Verify that all equipment functions properly prior to use.
  • Prepare waiting and recovery rooms or procedure suites to ensure patient comfort and readiness.
  • Perform meticulous maintenance of endoscopic equipment, including cleaning, disinfecting, and calibrating instruments according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Safely transport patients following medical personnel instructions.
  • Provide essential support to physicians and nurses during endoscopic procedures.
  • Attend necessary training to enhance or refresh relevant skills and stay current with best practices.
  • Collect specimens from patients as required.
  • Collaborate effectively with other care providers regarding procedural details and patients' conditions.
  • Stay current on endoscopy developments through literature review, professional discussions, or participation in professional organizations.
  • Assist with Business Office Support duties, including training on EPIC applications and front desk registration & copay collection.

Unit Overview

The Mt. Laurel and Willingboro locations operate as outpatient units. The Special Test Unit (STU) on the sixth floor of the main hospital serves both outpatient and inpatient needs. All units are managed by Cooper University Health Care, primarily supporting the diagnostic and therapeutic requirements of the Gastroenterology Division. Common procedures include upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. The pulmonary suite (STU only) performs airway endoscopy procedures, known as bronchoscopy.

Units are staffed by surgical schedulers, patient service representatives, nurses, and GI technicians. Anesthesiology is present for all GI procedures. Nurses rotate between admission (Pre-op), procedure suites, recovery (PACU), and pre-admission testing, requiring familiarity with all GI Unit roles and procedures.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • GI tech experience and/or patient care experience (e.g., medical assistant, patient care technician) is required.
  • Must possess the ability to learn IDX and EPIC applications.
  • Strong customer service skills are preferred, and some desk duties are required.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent is mandatory.

License/Certification Requirements

  • Current NJ-BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) is required.

Special Requirements

  • Must be able to travel to Willingboro or Camden if needed.
  • Flexibility for desk duties is required if needed.
