Role Summary
As a GI Technician, you will be integral to the Gastroenterology Division, primarily supporting diagnostic and therapeutic needs at our outpatient units in Mt. Laurel and Willingboro, and the combined outpatient/inpatient Special Test Unit (STU) on the sixth floor of the main hospital in Camden. You will be crucial in preparing for and assisting with procedures like upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, and bronchoscopy, ensuring seamless patient care and operational efficiency.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare rooms and equipment meticulously before endoscopic procedures, and ensure thorough cleanup and sterilization afterward.
- Maintain a precise inventory of equipment and supplies vital for endoscopic procedures.
- Guarantee all equipment functions properly through regular checks and calibration.
- Prepare waiting and recovery rooms or procedure suites to ensure patient comfort and readiness.
- Manage endoscopic equipment, including cleaning, disinfecting, and calibrating instruments according to manufacturer guidelines.
- Transport patients safely and efficiently as instructed by medical personnel.
- Provide essential assistance to physicians and nurses during endoscopic procedures.
- Attend necessary training to enhance or refresh critical skills and stay current with best practices.
- Collect specimens from patients accurately and efficiently.
- Collaborate effectively with other care providers, ensuring clear communication regarding procedures and patients' conditions.
- Stay informed on the latest endoscopy developments by reading literature, engaging with colleagues, and participating in professional organizations.
- Assist with Business Office Support duties, including training in EPIC applications and front desk registration & copay collection.
Unit Overview
Our Mt. Laurel and Willingboro locations are dedicated outpatient units. The Special Test Unit (STU) in the main hospital serves both outpatient and inpatient needs. All units support the Gastroenterology Division, performing common procedures like upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, and bronchoscopy (in the pulmonary suite at STU). Units are staffed by surgical schedulers, patient service representatives, nurses, and GI Technicians, with Anesthesiology present for all GI procedures. Nurses rotate through admission, procedure suites, recovery, and pre-admission testing, requiring familiarity with all unit roles.
Experience Required
- GI technician experience and/or patient care experience (e.g., medical assistant, patient care technician).
- Ability to quickly learn IDX and EPIC applications.
- Strong customer service skills preferred, as some desk duties are required.
Education Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent is required.
License/Certification Requirements
- Current NJ-BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) is mandatory.
Special Requirements
- Flexibility to travel to Willingboro or Camden as needed.
- Flexibility for desk duties as required.
