Role Summary
The Video Producer, The New Yorker produces, shoots, and edits short- and long-form videos that enhance the magazine’s storytelling. This position primarily focuses on editing, while also offering opportunities to develop and produce videos and series in collaboration with New Yorker writers and editors. Beyond daily post-production responsibilities, including guiding videos through our editorial process, the Video Producer plays a vital creative role in shaping The New Yorker’s distinct video storytelling voice and style. This role demands a sharp editorial sensibility, technical fluency, and a strong understanding of The New Yorker’s unique tone and narrative approach.
Key Qualifications
The successful candidate will demonstrate robust video editing and production skills, a proven ability to manage multiple projects under stringent deadlines, and experience in both documentary and journalistic formats. A keen understanding of the latest video techniques, trends, and forms across social media and documentary video is essential. This role requires a collaborative approach to working with writers, editors, and production teams. Candidates must present a strong portfolio showcasing creativity, resourcefulness, sound storytelling, and diverse experience in producing and editing videos across various genres, including short news pieces, cinematic documentaries, and formatted series. This is a guild position.
Responsibilities
- Edit original short- and long-form videos covering a wide array of topics, from news and investigative journalism to culture and humor. This includes integrating archival research, animation, sound design, and motion graphics to enrich videos and strengthen narrative impact.
- Oversee the post-production workflow, adhering to established guidelines, and navigate videos through the comprehensive editorial closing process, encompassing fact-checking, copy editing, and legal review.
- Provide support for video projects during pre-production, production, and distribution phases, offering creative input and production coordination as requested.
- Independently produce and shoot videos when assigned.
- Review article drafts and propose innovative video concepts to enhance or adapt them for video format.
- Collaborate closely with other producers, editors, and reporters to identify the most effective video storytelling approaches.
- Work with institutional team members to foster and advance their technical and creative proficiencies in video reporting and production.
- Develop innovative creative strategies that help define the unique style and voice inherent in every New Yorker video.
- Review The New Yorker Documentary submissions as requested, and work with filmmakers to prepare their films for publication.
- Assist with the preparation and coordination of screenings for New Yorker films with external vendors.
- Undertake additional duties as required, or as assigned by management.
Skills And Qualifications
- Five or more years of experience in digital video, with a strong emphasis on journalism or documentary production.
- Expertise in Adobe Premiere Pro and proficiency in After Effects.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating and working on post-production processes, including color grading, sound mixing, and graphic integration.
- Experience editing across diverse styles and tones (e.g., journalistic, humorous).
- Proven ability to manage tight deadlines and simultaneously produce multiple projects.
- Solid digital video shooting skills, proficient with various cameras, specifically Sony cameras, and knowledgeable in lighting techniques and gear, as well as capturing high-quality sound.
- A keen awareness of current best practices, including evolving forms and trends in social video and documentary.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and extensive experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
- A film production degree is preferred.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Ambitious, proactive, and a quick learner.
- A strong foundational knowledge of and deep interest in the distinctive style and voice of The New Yorker, including its current video series.
- Willingness to work occasional early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as project demands may dictate.
