Job Description
Variable Hours Officer - Registered Nurse
Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking a Variable Hours Officer - Registered Nurse to manage pre- and post-operative patients. This role involves providing comprehensive clinical care services, including assessing, diagnosing, prescribing, treating, and educating patients. The incumbent will work collaboratively with other clinicians in a team-oriented approach to patient care.
Responsibilities
- Initiate patient history and physical examinations.
- Develop and implement pre- and post-operative education programs in conjunction with the medical team.
- Support ongoing clinical functions of the Department of Surgery to provide compassionate patient-centered care and quality improvement.
- Manage patient cases, including coordinating diagnostic testing evaluations, reviewing lab reports, and supervising direct patient care.
- Coordinate and participate in the overall medical and surgical management of patients.
- Provide direct patient care, including triaging patient requests and calls in both pre- and post-operative settings.
- Review patient charts prior to surgery and alert attending physicians to any deviations from normal.
- Discuss cases with attending physicians and other health professionals to develop comprehensive patient care plans.
- Assist attending physicians with procedures within the RN’s scope of practice.
- Perform therapeutic procedures such as suture removal and chest tube removal, in accordance with training.
- Develop and provide patient education and discharge instructions, aiming to streamline pre- and post-operative education programs.
- Evaluate test findings, make initial medical diagnoses, and establish initial therapeutic plans.
- Initiate and document appropriate medical orders based on patient condition and progress.
- Ensure timely and efficient patient referral processes and transitions into specialty services.
- Anticipate patient and family needs, communicate and facilitate ongoing care with multidisciplinary team members, departments, and community organizations.
- Provide and reinforce patient and family teaching as needed.
- Participate in professional development activities to stay current with healthcare trends.
- Represent the organization at public professional meetings and conferences as requested.
- Coordinate inpatient and outpatient care.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing or equivalent in education and experience.
- 4 years of related experience.
- Valid New York State RN License.
