Job Description

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Clinical Care Manager and the Director of Dermatologic Surgery, the Clinical Coordinator III RN is responsible for assisting in the management of the delivery of patient care across two faculty practice sites and four divisions, including a hospital-sponsored teaching clinic. In addition to primary responsibilities within the division of Dermatologic surgery, the clinical nurse will be expected to assist as reasonably needed in other divisions within the department of dermatology.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate patient care, including anesthetizing by local injection and assisting in surgical procedures.
  • Develop nurse-patient/family relationships and assess/manage patients across all adult age groups (young adult to geriatrics).
  • Perform diagnostic testing and analyze results, meticulously recording patient information.
  • Communicate treatment and follow-up plans clearly to patients.
  • Order appropriate laboratory supplies and follow up on results.
  • Answer pre and post-operative questions and perform pre-operative telephone consultations.
  • Gather data and act as a liaison.
  • Assist Physicians with assessment, evaluation, and management of patient care.
  • Communicate all clinical activity to the supervising Physician.
  • Prepare, dilute, and draw up medication for use in faculty practice and Resident clinic.
  • Prepare equipment and aid physician during patient examinations, surgical procedures, Mohs surgery, and diagnostic testing.
  • Observe, record, and report patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians.
  • Dispense medication as directed.
  • Provide back-up support for Dermatology medical procedures in both faculty practices and Resident Dermatology clinic.
  • Assess patients using all available physical and diagnostic data, incorporating medical history, and evaluate patient status and progress.
  • Maintain exam rooms for necessary supplies and materials, ensuring cleanliness and preparing supply lists.
  • Provide coverage to monitor and assess patients during and after selected therapies, including on-site monitoring for infusions if reactions occur; perform CPR.
  • Attend staff meetings, patient support meetings, and continuing education pertinent to the specialty.
  • Participate in sign-out activities and all patient follow-up.
  • Perform patient and family education and counseling on disease state, management/plan of care, side effects, treatment, and medications.
  • Perform phone triage and provide appropriate phone follow-up/direction to patients.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory agency standards (e.g., OSHA, JCAHO, DOH, HIPAA, billing compliance).
  • Provide cross-coverage and other duties in other areas as needed.

Competencies

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of medical safety practices, ability to evaluate and implement new policies, and current clinical best practices. Excellent oral/written communication, interpersonal, organizational, and computer skills (Epic electronic medical record, Microsoft Office) are essential. The role requires the ability to work effectively independently and within diverse workgroups, identify problems, research solutions, and exercise initiative, judgment, and independent decision-making.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent in education and experience.
  • 4 years of related experience.
  • Current New York State RN license.
  • BLS certification and ACLS certification required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's prepared candidates preferred.
  • Dermatology and Mohs experience strongly preferred.
