Overview

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world by building the emerging onchain platform and the future global financial system. As a Senior Software Engineer, Backend, you will help define and evolve the x402 protocol – an open, internet-scale standard for internet-native payments.

What You Will Do

  • Define the x402 protocol standard for internet-native payment.
  • Build and maintain x402 related products including SDK, Payment MCP, Payment Facilitators, and onchain payment protocols.
  • Collaborate with open-source contributors via GitHub discussions, issues, and PR reviews.

What We Look For

  • 6+ years of software development experience with a focus on backend engineering.
  • Strong experience building scalable, secure software and SDKs.
  • Proficiency with Golang, Typescript, and Python.
  • Knowledge in Web3 technologies, stablecoins, smart contracts, and wallets.
  • Crypto passion and experience is a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AI and emerging AI protocol standards (MCP, A2A).
  • Track record with impactful open-source projects.

Work Environment & Culture

The role is part of a team that values high caliber work, intense collaboration and in-person participation at team wide offsites. While many Coinbase roles are remote-first, on-site collaboration is required throughout the year.
