About the Role

As a DevRel Engineer at Coder, you will shape the experience that helps curious users become active practitioners, contributors, and advocates within their companies, universities, and home labs. You will curate our template registry, improve community documentation and guides, engage actively on Discord and GitHub, and present Coder through online and in-person demos. You will collaborate across product, engineering, marketing, and our open-source community to enhance the clarity, speed, and utility of every path into Coder. This role is contract-to-hire.

What You’ll Do Here

Community and Feedback Loop

• Be a consistent technical presence in Discord and GitHub, answering questions, unblocking users, and identifying recurring patterns.
• Support community contributors by facilitating the integration of valuable fixes, templates, and ideas into the registry, documentation, or product/engineering backlog.
• Translate community friction into actionable feedback for product, engineering, documentation, and marketing teams.
• Monitor developer sentiment across platforms like Hacker News, Reddit, and LinkedIn, and surface relevant insights internally.
• Balance self-serve support with direct assistance to ensure users can progress efficiently, with or without direct Coder contact.

Registry Management

• Maintain a healthy, useful, and easily contributable registry by auditing coverage gaps and prioritizing platform engineer needs.
• Create and maintain high-quality first-party templates for key technology stacks including Python, Node, Go, Rust, and Java.
• Build reference templates for Docker, Kubernetes, Proxmox, AWS, and bare metal environments.
• Improve contributor guides, streamline review processes, and partner with engineering on registry server enhancements to facilitate easier contributions.
• Review community pull requests promptly and constructively, providing clear feedback and maintaining reasonable quality standards with a focus on merging valuable contributions.
• Maintain CI, linting, and automated testing to ensure registry health as the Terraform provider evolves.

Conferences, Demos, and Events

• Present talks or lead workshops at technical events like KubeCon, Open Source Summit, SCaLE, and FOSDEM.
• Develop demo environments using public GitHub repositories for easy cloning, deployment, and learning.
• Create hardware demos on devices such as Raspberry Pi, Intel NUCs, and home lab servers.
• Produce recorded demos for sales, marketing, onboarding, and community teams, showcasing important use cases.
• Conduct live product demos at events and online, focusing on real user scenarios.
• Collaborate with marketing on content such as blog posts, social media clips, podcast appearances, and launch announcements.

Documentation and Guides

• Audit and update existing documentation and guides for gaps, friction, and outdated information.
• Own the getting-started experience, focusing on reducing user activation drop-off.
• Write in-depth guides for complex scenarios including Docker-in-Docker, air-gapped deployments, and enterprise IdP integrations.
• Partner with product managers and technical writers to ensure community-facing documentation is complete, accurate, and user-friendly.

Community Programs

• Develop and manage at least one community program, such as educational partnerships with universities, community funds, or home lab licenses.
• Initiate and manage programs like platform engineering roundtables and bounty programs for high-value contributions.

Examples and Tutorials

• Create end-to-end tutorials for real-world workflows, such as migrating development environments or setting up AI coding agents.
• Build and maintain a library of reference deployments demonstrating best practices.
• Transform frequently asked questions into durable resources for community members.

What We’re Looking For

• A background in software or platform engineering, with experience writing code, managing servers, and troubleshooting technical systems.
• Strong practitioner empathy, with the ability to connect with developers, platform engineers, and enterprise users.
• Willingness to travel up to 20%.
• A tinkering mindset focused on improving, automating, and simplifying processes.
• PM-like pattern recognition to identify community feedback signals, prioritize effectively, and route insights.
• A bias for action to proactively fix issues and clarify ownership.
• Experience participating in technical communities (e.g., contributor, moderator, maintainer).
• Strong technical writing skills to create clear and concise guides for busy professionals.
• Comfort using tools like LLMs, automation, and scripting to scale impact while maintaining a human touch.

Bonus Points If You Have

• Experience speaking at conferences, running workshops, or building an audience for technical content.
• Experience as a community moderator, support engineer, maintainer, or trusted technical presence.
• A recognizable presence in technical communities (open source, platform engineering, etc.).
• Familiarity with Coder or similar remote development environment tools (Gitpod, DevPod, GitHub Codespaces).
• Prior work on an open-source project with an active user community.
• Exposure to enterprise platform engineering concepts (SSO, SAML, Vault, etc.).

How You’re Measured

Community investment is tracked by its contribution to adoption, engagement, and revenue, with a focus on highly engaged OSS deployments (20+ active users). Your work will be evaluated based on its direct or foundational contribution to this outcome. Tangible Metrics Include:

• Deployments at scale (OSS instances with 20+ active users).
• Weekly installs and activation rate.
• Community messages and engagement mix.
• Identified community champions.
• Registry and docs health (contributor growth, time to merge, content reach).

We also value qualitative contributions, such as recognizing active community members by name, fostering relationships and pipeline at OSS events, improving product decisions for OSS, and ensuring owned programs are growing and producing results.

Interview Process

Coder aims for a transparent, consistent, and enjoyable interview process, typically completed in two to four weeks. You will meet with a mix of individual contributors, managers, and senior leaders. AI Use During Interviews:

• Not permitted: Using AI assistance during conversational interviews.
• Permitted: Using AI tooling for take-home assessments. Please flag where and to what extent AI was used. Your submission will not be penalized if AI usage is honestly declared.

Coder's Use of AI in Hiring:
