Job Description
Cloudera is looking for an Engineering Manager in Hungary with a strong technical background to help drive the development of Cloudera’s Operational Database components and services. The Operational Database team is responsible for the development of Cloudera Operational Database as well as Apache HBase, Phoenix, ZooKeeper and related open source projects.Cloudera Operational Database (aka. COD) is a public cloud based solution based on Apache HBase and Phoenix. HBase is the Hadoop database, a distributed, scalable, big data store and is one of the most widely used components in Hadoop, an essential tool for data engineering. Phoenix adds an SQL flavour to HBase, combining the SQL world with the scalability of HBase. ZooKeeper is the high availability coordination service of the Big Data world and is one of the most widely used components in the Hadoop ecosystem, an essential tool for coordinating component instances in large clusters.
As an Engineering Manager, you will be leading the Hungary based development team and together with its USA and APAC-based peer teams you will develop, distribute and support COD. You will also lead the team that develops open source HBase, Phoenix and ZooKeeper. You will help plan and deliver the innovation roadmap, make our products more supportable, enterprise ready and feature-rich.
As Engineering Manager you will:
- Lead a team of strong engineers to design, code, and implement elegant, scalable, enterprise-quality application services.
- Build strong relationships and collaborate with platform and UI engineers, quality engineers, UX designers, as well as, Engineering Management, Product Management, Field Engineering, and other external partners.
- Work closely with Product Managers to define the capabilities that should be built into the product based on customer use cases.
- As a leader, you should be able to fill in, to address gaps in process/practices followed by the team/organization.
- Help to define the career growth of your reportees by working with them and being responsible for their growth.
- Enhance developer velocity and team agility.
We’re excited about you if you have:
- Bachelors’ degree or equivalent with 2+ years of related management experience.
- Background in a distributed database systems, including database storage internals, NoSQL storage.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Solid interpersonal skills conducive to a distributed team environment.
- Solid experience with system software design and development with a strong understanding of computer architecture, storage, network, and IO subsystems, and distributed systems.
- Strong Understanding of Distributed Systems and building systems at scale.
- Should be able to drive the architecture/design and provide technical direction to the team.
- Past backend engineering skill set with expertise in Java, or strong C++ skills, with intermediate Java expertise.
- Ability to take ownership for large scale projects and leadership skills to drive them to success.
You may also have:
- A good understanding of the Apache Big Data ecosystem and over 3+ years of experience in database systems.
- Recognized contributions to open source projects.
- Experience using projects such as HBase, Phoenix, Accumulo, Cassandra, etc., is a big plus.
- Good Understanding of database development, distributed database systems, scaling, performance tuning.
- Experience building PaaS and SaaS products.
- Experience with container technologies (Kubernetes, Docker, Openshift, EKS, AKS, GKE, Google Anthos etc.), PKI and cloud networking.
