We are looking for a Counsel, Legislation and Government Relations with deep knowledge of state and federal legislative processes. The ideal candidate has experience working with legislators and executive agencies to advance policy ideas and shape regulatory decisions. You understand the mechanics of executive agency enforcement actions and can advise a fast-moving business on policy and legal matters. You are adept at collaborating with diverse stakeholders to drive policy initiatives and resolve legal questions. This in-house role offers an opportunity for professional growth within a small, supportive team. You will leverage your skills as a negotiator, advocate, and strategist to support a mission-driven business. We value individuals who are comfortable with ambiguity and eager to contribute in a rapidly growing startup environment, willing to quickly tackle new legal issues. While government relations is a focus, you are also prepared to handle traditional legal work as needed by the team and business. You will support the company through both government relations outreach and legal advising.Responsibilities
- Identify specific legislative and regulatory goals in various states.
- Engage with state and federal lobbyists to draft proposed legislation and regulations.
- Create coalitions with other stakeholders who share our vision for legislative and regulatory change.
- Monitor relevant state and federal legislation and regulatory changes.
- Work with business teams, including Product, Sales, and People Ops, to implement legislative and regulatory changes, conducting risk analysis of compliance.
- Provide legal advice to business teams across a range of issues.
- Prepare responses to regulator inquiries.
- Manage contracts with outside counsel, ensuring deliverables are on time, within budget, and meet business needs.
- Lead external relations campaigns to engage stakeholders on advocacy issues.
- Work cross-functionally to identify, investigate, and manage risks across the business.
- Analyze and provide guidance on evolving rules, regulations, compliance requirements, and trends impacting the tech and healthcare industries.
- Manage legal matters including human resources, independent contractor classification, and state registration requirements.
What Success Looks Like 90 Days In
- Developed and implemented a plan to address a company priority through government relations in at least two new states or two new outreach strategies.
- Developed and implemented a plan to work with a specific group of stakeholders to promote the company’s interests.
- Taken ownership over and fine-tuned the company’s legislative and regulatory monitoring system, sharing insights with the legal and business teams.
- Contributed to drafting and updating at least one company policy and improving at least one cross-functional process.
- Integrated into and supported the business on at least one workstream outside of traditional government relations.
Need To Have
- JD, with admission to a state bar.
- At least 5 years of relevant legal experience and/or government relations experience (at a well-respected lobbying firm, law firm, in-house, or high-level government role).
- At least 2 years of experience working in state or federal government.
- Experience engaging legislators and government regulators.
- Bias toward action and problem-solving.
- Ability to take ownership and manage projects independently.
- Excellent communication and writing abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure, autonomously, and meet tight deadlines.
- Agility and flexibility to take on new tasks in a fast-paced, scaling tech company.
- Ability to engage with and interpret government data.
- Experience working cross-culturally with diverse, global teams.
- Ability to travel throughout the United States.

Salary
The base salary range for this position is $190,000 - $220,000 annually. This role may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus and/or equity compensation.
