Job Description

Summary

Clio is the global leader in legal AI technology, empowering legal professionals and law firms of every size to work smarter, faster, and more securely. We are transforming the legal experience for all by bettering the lives of legal professionals while increasing access to justice.

We are currently seeking a Staff Design Researcher to join our growing Product Research Team. This role can be performed from one of our Canadian offices, remotely from the US or Canada, or a combination of both. We’re looking for a talented Staff Design Researcher who has a track record of developing foundational insights that drive decision-making, prioritization, and strategy with measurable results. They should be well-versed—and demonstrate creativity—in a range of research methodologies, such as field studies, interviews, diary studies, participatory workshops, ethnography, surveys, and usability testing. The ideal candidate will also be able to work independently, scoping a program of research and setting a yearly research agenda, while remaining flexible and making adjustments in a fast-paced, rapid-growth environment.

What your team does

At Clio, customer insights are at the core of how we build world-class products, and the Product Research team is what makes this possible. As a Staff Design Researcher at Clio, you’ll help product designers, product managers, and engineers build a deep understanding of our customers and their needs. We are building out our Product Research Team and are looking for high-performing, creative, and collaborative people that bring care and curiosity to everything they do. If the idea of contributing research and building out processes on a newly forming team, in an egoless environment where all ideas are valued is exciting to you, then this is the team for you!

What you’ll work on

  • Act as a strategic research consultant who drives projects that break open new opportunities and address our most existential questions and risks.
  • Build foundational, canonical insights—such as role types, jobs to be done, customer journey maps, and customer-centric metrics.
  • Develop an evaluation and measurement program to help teams qualitatively and quantitatively understand how our experiences measure up to customer expectations.
  • Make connections across different research and insight areas—e.g., data science, competitive analysis, win/loss analysis—to identify patterns that enable larger product goals and a more holistic view of the customer.
  • Own priorities and scope projects in alignment with business goals and technical constraints, in deep collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Drive ideas to improve products through research insights and recommendations.
  • Communicate and activate insights in a way that influences stakeholders across the organization to drive new customer-centric product ideas and product strategies.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • An ability to derive and articulate platform, framework, and design system-level insights that take into consideration a range of use cases and user types while balancing use case-specific needs.
  • Experience conducting research in the generative AI space, and knowledge of how generative AI is fundamentally shifting user experiences.
  • Experience running B2B and B2B2C research, using a range of methods such as field studies, interviews, diary studies, participatory workshops, ethnography, surveys, and usability testing.
  • Quantitative and evaluative research methods, with experience with smaller customer base sizes.
  • An ability to derive and articulate platform, framework, and design system-level insights, and how they intersect with product insights.
  • Experience managing and influencing cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Measurable results from having driven product decisions and strategy.
  • An ability to incorporate and triangulate qualitative and quantitative data from a range of sources.
  • Skills understanding business dynamics and needs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Low ego and open-mindedness.

Bonus points if you have

  • A master’s degree or PhD.
  • A quantitative background, including inferential statistics and theory testing.
  • Experience not just influencing, but originating strategy.
  • Experience in a range of B2B, from Small to Mid-Market to Enterprise.
  • Experience applying foresight methodologies, e.g., signal/horizon scanning, scenario planning, etc.

What you will find here

Compensation is one of the main components of Clio’s Total Rewards Program. Some highlights include:

  • Competitive, equitable salary with top-tier health benefits, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Hybrid work environment, with expectation for local Clions (Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Dublin and Sydney) to be in office min. twice per week.
  • Flexible time off policy, with an encouraged 20 days off per year.
  • $2000 annual counseling benefit.
  • RRSP matching and RESP contribution.
  • Clioversary recognition program with special acknowledgement at 3, 5, 7, and 10 years.

The expected salary range for this role is $148,000 to $222,000 CAD. The final offer amount will be dependent on geographical region, applicable experience, and skillset of the candidate.

Our team shows up as their authentic selves and are united by our mission.
