Agency Overview

The First Judicial District of Pennsylvania (FJD) serves as the Philadelphia County Court System comprising the Court of Common Pleas and the Municipal Court. Its mission is to adjudicate cases and provide accessible justice.

Position Summary

The Court Reporter records courtroom proceedings using a stenotype or computer-aided transcription machine. Accuracy and speed are critical as the transcripts form the official record of court proceedings.

Essential Functions

  • Record testimony verbatim during court proceedings.
  • Read back portions of transcripts upon request.
  • Edit, proofread, and produce certified written and electronic transcripts.
  • Respond to inquiries from judiciary, attorneys, and the public.
  • Perform administrative duties including billing, record-keeping, and report documentation.
  • Purchase and maintain equipment and software.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Strong command of the English language, legal and medical terminology; excellent record-keeping; ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision; and effective interpersonal skills.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate from an accredited court reporting school.
  • Ability to transcribe at specified speeds with high accuracy.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation.
  • Covid-19 vaccination recommended.
