About the City of Ottawa

The Business and Technical Support Services Branch within the Transit Services Department is responsible for providing strategic, business, technical, and other operational support services to the Transportation Services department. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to vital public transit communications.

Job Summary

As a Coordinator, Social Media, you will be responsible for coordinating live update activities for all transit modes. This includes comprehensive social media monitoring, moderating various social media channels, and developing engaging content for social media, public alerts, OCTV, and Customer Service Centres.

You will serve as a technical advisor, providing functional and administrative expertise related to live updates, and actively participate in the planning, coordination, and implementation of Transit Services' live update strategy and tactics. Your role also involves preparing and providing regular status reports on live update activities, verifying and updating staff on upcoming events, and coordinating and facilitating end-user training. Additionally, you will assist with special events, emergency, and crisis communications as required.

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a 3-year university degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, and/or media relations, including at least one year working in a social media environment.
  • Experience in an information technology (IT) training/education and/or transit services environment is considered an asset.

Knowledge

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • In-depth knowledge of social media dashboard programs (e.g., HootSuite, TweetDeck), current social media channels, Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop, and content management systems.
  • Effective communication tactics and techniques using traditional and web-based channels.
  • Awareness of trends in communications and transit industries and approaches.
  • Understanding of local and current events, and effective media relations.
  • Knowledge of City governance, initiatives, programs, and services, as well as customer service requirements.
  • Proficiency in training assessment and delivery, quality assurance procedures, and applicable health and safety legislation.

Competencies, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in social media dashboard programs (HootSuite, TweetDeck, etc.), current social media channels, Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop, and content management systems.
  • Superior verbal communication, writing, and editing skills with an exceptional eye for detail, editorial judgment, and grammatical precision.
  • Ability to conceptualize, solicit, research, and write stories for the official blog.
  • Creative and logical thinking abilities, along with effective organization, coordination, and time management skills.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, and the ability to identify issues in the public domain.
  • Demonstrated effective judgment, independent decision-making, excellent interpersonal, and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, and to prepare detailed and concise reports.
  • Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, exercising tact, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work directly with City staff, elected officials, and senior management.
  • Capability to prepare comprehensive communications strategies and influence stakeholders regarding communications tactics.
  • Customer service sensitivity to meet diverse customer requirements, coupled with good judgment, tact, discretion, diplomacy, creativity, initiative, a positive attitude, self-motivation, organization, and dependability.
  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations, with an interest in current events and public affairs.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays, if required.

What You Need To Know

Language Requirement: This position is designated Bilingual, requiring specific levels of proficiency in both French (oral, reading, writing) and English (oral, reading, writing). Candidates who do not meet these language requirements will be required to participate in training. Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
