Job Description

Accountant at City of New York

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The New York City Police Department strives to foster a safe and fair city through the strategic deployment of resources, focusing on both crime prevention and addressing quality-of-life concerns while building lasting community relationships.

The Fiscal Control Section oversees the processing of payments and revenue receipts, manages banking operations for the Department and reviews special expenses for various commands.

Key Responsibilities of the Accountant

  • Vendor Invoicing and Payments: Analyzing invoices and supporting documentation to process payments to vendors, tracking payments, and following up on outstanding issues.
  • Revenue Collection: Monitoring and managing revenue collection processes to ensure proper recording and accountability.
  • Special Projects: Assisting the team on any ad hoc financial projects.

Work Location & Schedule

This Accountant position is located at 375 Pearl Street, New York, NY 10038, with a work schedule of 9 AM - 5 PM.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in accounting (with one course each in advanced accounting and auditing); OR
  • A valid New York State Certified Public Accountant license.

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must also have at least one year of experience as an Accountant - Assignment Level I or at least two years of satisfactory full-time professional accounting or auditing experience.

Preferred Skills

The ideal Accountant candidate will possess:

  • The ability to review, compare, and interpret figures and data.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in FMS, PASSPort, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Quick Books.

Programs & Residency

This position is also open to qualified persons with a disability eligible for the 55-a Program. As a prospective employee, you may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs. New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment, with some exceptions for continuous long-term City employees.
