Equipment Operator II - Public Works
The City of Leander is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator II to perform mid-level complex maintenance duties. This role is crucial for the construction, repair, and maintenance of streets, public rights-of-way, and storm water infrastructure. The Equipment Operator II may supervise crew activities in the absence of a Crew Leader, ensuring safety and assisting in training new employees. This position operates under general supervision with considerable latitude for independent judgment and requires participation in an on-call rotation.
Responsibilities
- Perform general maintenance for streets, drainage, and rights-of-way.
- Prepare equipment, vehicles, and tools for work assignments.
- Apply knowledge of street and roadway construction and maintenance.
- Apply crack seal to roadways and assist with concrete duties.
- Repair guardrails, bridges, and storm drainpipe systems.
- Remove debris and obstructions from drainage right-of-ways.
- Perform mowing and trimming maintenance as assigned.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions, exposed to dust, fumes, and noise.
- Pick-up litter, remove debris, and clean graffiti.
- Drive vehicles to various work sites.
- Respond to after-hours call-outs for emergency situations (weather, flooding, etc.) and participate in on-call rotation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule
Monday – Thursday, 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (subject to change). On-call rotation is required.
Required Education and Experience
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Minimum one year of work experience in construction, maintenance, and repair of city streets, sidewalks, public rights-of-way, storm water detention ponds, and drainage systems, or related technical training.
Required Certificates and Licenses
- Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class A with an air brake endorsement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of work experience in similar maintenance and repair tasks.
- Ability to set up secure work zones using cones and barricades.
- Skills and ability to operate various equipment including dump truck, water truck, bucket lift truck, VAC trailer, Jet machine, motor grader, backhoe, skid loader, roller, grader, and small hand tools, chainsaw, shovel, two-way radio, cell phone, measuring devices, and excavator.
- Knowledge of construction and maintenance practices, hazards, and safety precautions for equipment operations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Commitment to working safely and wearing provided personal protective equipment (PPE).
Physical Demands
Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, and smell. Must be able to lift/move up to 100 pounds and push/pull/drag up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close/distance vision, color/peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Accommodations available for individuals with disabilities.
Working Environment
Works outdoors in extreme temperatures and inclement weather. Exposed to dust, fumes, loud noises, and potentially wet/humid conditions.
