Job Summary

Conducts or participates in non-sworn field investigative work of primarily property crimes (Business thefts, Burglary, Robbery without weapons, Criminal Mischief, Vandalism) in support of sworn officers of the Police Department.

Overview

The Crime Scene Investigator I conducts non-sworn field investigative work and preserves evidence for property crimes and other crimes. Supports sworn officers of the Police Department with Crime Scene activities.

Essential Functions

  • Prioritizes and determines crime scene response calls urgency and necessity; plans the method, type, and sequence of processing and preserving evidence in the field of a crime scene.
  • Searches for, collects, processes, packages and preserves physical evidence involved in the crime investigation; takes detailed and specific photos of crime scenes and pertinent evidence.
  • Interviews complainant and witnesses to assemble facts of crime scene to refresh memory; takes elimination fingerprints to clear complainant.
  • Drafts, prepares, and completes supplemental reports for each crime scene to add information to detective’s report; signs as witness on suspect or witness statement affidavits.
  • Responds to telephone inquiries in order to provide information pertaining to Police procedures; assists detectives/police officers in using city and county computers to access information.
  • Appears in county court for testimony on crime scene and evidence.
  • Gives tips and advice for future on personal and property safety to citizens and business owner; responds to telephone inquiries in order to provide information pertaining to Police procedures.
  • Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Ability to pass the Texas Council of Government 40-hour Traffic course.

Education

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate degree in a criminal justice, criminology, forensic science, social science, or physical science field.

Experience

One (1) year law enforcement or investigative support experience with a municipal, county, or federal regulatory agency.

Equivalency(ies)

  • High school diploma or GED plus three (3) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a field other than those specified above plus one (1) year of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in one of the specified fields listed above will meet the education and experience requirements.

License

Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

Other Requirement(s)

  • Must pass intensive background investigation.
  • Must pass polygraph and drug screening.
  • No FELONY convictions.
  • No Class A or B MISDEMEANOR convictions.
  • No Family Violence convictions.
  • Cannot currently be on deferred adjudication for any FELONY, Class A or Class B MISDEMEANOR.
  • Availability to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Subject to twenty-four (24) hour call-out.

Salary Range

$22.99 - $25.56
