Overview

The Transit Operator role at City and County of San Francisco is a position with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). Applicants apply for a civil service exam to be placed on an eligible list for future vacancies. This recruitment fills both full-time and part-time positions.

Role Description

Under general supervision, the Transit Operator is responsible for operating a variety of transit vehicles including diesel and electric motor coaches, cable cars, streetcars and light rail vehicles. Duties include conducting pre- and post-operational inspections, safely navigating vehicles, collecting fares, assisting with disability access, and responding to emergencies.

Important Duties

  • Conduct pre-operational vehicle inspections per regulations.
  • Ensure passenger compartment safety and clear hazards.
  • Operate vehicles safely through traffic and environmental conditions.
  • Assist passengers including operating disability access lifts.
  • Collect fares, issue transfers, and provide route information.

Work Conditions & Training

This role requires rotating shifts, weekend and holiday work, and outdoor conditions. Candidates must pass a physical and drug test as required by federal and agency regulations. All selected candidates will undergo mandatory operator training and, if needed, obtain the proper Class B Driver Permit with Passenger endorsement and airbrakes.
