About the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH)

The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions, including the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care, with locations throughout the City such as Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.

The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services, in conjunction with SFHN, offers a range of mental health and substance use treatment services.

Role Overview: Inpatient Pharmacy Operations and Clinical Supervisor

As a Supervising Pharmacist, you will provide supervision and technical/clinical direction to clinical pharmacists, staff pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians within an acute care inpatient pharmacy setting. You are responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and standards governing pharmaceutical services, as well as departmental pharmacy objectives, policies, and procedures. This role includes operational oversight of the acute care clinical pharmacy program and personnel management within the Inpatient Pharmacy.

Additionally, you will support the Director of Pharmacy in developing and implementing strategic initiatives and will manage the day-to-day operations of your assigned area.

Role Description

Under General Direction, the Supervising Pharmacist provides supervision for pharmaceutical services within the San Francisco Department of Public Health to assure quality patient care, appropriate drug therapy, and compliance with all applicable regulations. Essential functions include:

  • Manages, supervises, and schedules assigned personnel, including completing performance appraisals and carrying out appropriate disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates pharmaceutical services.
  • Continuously interprets and assists in the development and implementation of departmental rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Communicates with physicians, nurses, and other health-care professionals, as well as the general public.
  • Prepares and maintains reports, memoranda, and records.
  • Assists in managerial decisions, including developing the budget.
  • Develops and trains staff to support and enhance professional development.
  • Performs professional pharmacist duties as needed.
  • Procures pharmaceuticals and supplies and maintains inventory.

The Supervising Pharmacist also performs other related duties as assigned.

How to Qualify

Minimum Qualifications - Required:

  • EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Requires at least two (2) years (equivalent to 4,000 hours) of experience as a licensed pharmacist in a hospital pharmacy; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • LICENSE: Requires possession of a valid Registered Pharmacist license issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy (Please attach a copy). License status must be "Current" according to the official state board website.
  • SPECIAL CONDITIONS: One (1) year of recent and verifiable inpatient pharmacy experience obtained within the last five years.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (based on a 40-hour work week).

Selection Procedures

Training and Experience (T&E) Evaluation (Weight: 100%):

This evaluation measures knowledge, skills, and abilities in job-related areas such as:

  • Knowledge of current methods and procedures of pharmacies and contemporary pharmacy practice.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations as related to Pharmacy.
  • Ability to supervise and monitor pharmacy staff and its functions, and to delegate responsibilities appropriately.
  • Ability to develop, plan, schedule, coordinate, and evaluate assigned personnel.
  • Ability to make decisions, problem-solve, prioritize activities, use initiative, and act independently.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to teach, train, and orient individuals in pharmacy operations and procedures, and drug therapy.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse customer base.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Training and Experience Evaluation exam to continue in the selection process.
