Job Description
Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.
When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.
As a Digital Architect - HR Technology, you will participate in defining functional designs and application systems architecture across various digital platforms.
What You Will Do
- Partner closely with Caterpillar IT to maintain an end-to-end view of the HR tech stack, including current-state architecture and target state development.
- Drive architectural and data integration capability, defining patterns that enable reuse, scalability, and clean integrations across tools.
- Develop detailed architecture deliverables to solve business problems.
- Design an application's technical infrastructure, such as specific databases, programming languages, utilities, and testing approaches.
- Lead the evaluation and deployment of innovative technologies to add or enhance existing digital technical capabilities.
- Participate in addressing business requirements for applications and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver digital solutions that meet business results.
What You Have
You possess the ability to objectively evaluate tools, platforms, and vendors – balancing factors such as cost, complexity, and long-term maintainability. You can clearly explain why a choice was made, not just what was chosen, bridging the gap between business and technology. This includes explaining complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, influencing technology teams without formal authority, and creating clear diagrams and documentation that align everyone around a shared solution.
As an HR technology architect, you excel at translating HR strategy (talent, workforce planning, skills, AI-enabled insights) into technical solutions. You will partner closely with HR, Legal, Finance, and IT to align architecture decisions with operating models, change management, and long-term transformation goals.
Top Candidates Will Have
- An understanding of major HR platforms (e.g., Workday) and their native capabilities, data schemas, and limitations. This includes knowing when to configure vs. customize or when to “make” vs. “buy” a technology solution.
- A blend of HR and technology skills.
- Ability to foster relationships between different business functions, such as IT and Legal.
Skills Descriptors
- Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems. Seeks discrepancies, organizes steps, identifies causes, quantifies costs/benefits, and breaks down complex problems.
- Effective Communications: Understanding effective communication concepts, tools, and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs. Delivers helpful feedback, listens non-defensively, makes presentations, avoids jargon, and considers non-verbal cues.
- Application Design, Architecture: Knowledge of basic activities and deliverables of application design; ability to utilize design methodologies, tools, and techniques to convert business requirements into technical application designs. Facilitates design reviews, creates/evaluates alternatives, interprets APIs, develops distinct designs, and prepares technical documents.
- Data Architecture: Knowledge of processes, techniques, and factors that affect data architecture; ability to design blueprints on how to integrate data resources for business processes and functional support. Monitors design processes, recommends improvements, coordinates resources, guides junior architects, anticipates obstacles, and solves complex issues.
- IT Architecture: Knowledge of Information Technology (IT) architecture; ability to design and improve organizational IT structures, supporting business operations. Consults on planning/integrating/migrating, provides solutions, creates cohesive applications, oversees compliance, evaluates standards, and directs discussions on open architecture.
- Platform Architecture: Knowledge of technologies and methods to design processing mechanisms and roadmaps to execute business application systems; ability to design these roadmaps and deploy supportive interfaces. Monitors compliance, guides less experienced architects, advises on deliverables, recommends improvements, teaches cross-team members, and resolves complex issues.
- Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements. Follows policies, confirms deliverables, communicates with customers, participates in documentation, and utilizes organizational methods.
- Target Architecture: Knowledge of target architecture; ability to develop the IT blueprint and roadmap while aligning with business strategies and objectives. Designs phases, selects services, monitors processes, advises on QA, guides junior architects, coordinates resources, and provides solutions to modeling problems.
