Overview

The Manager, Ontology and Data Modeling at Capital One is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise ontologies supporting Capital One's Data Strategy. This role works collaboratively across Capital One lines of business to develop domain ontologies and integrate semantic technology into data products and services.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Partner with governance and tooling teams to set ontological standards.
  • Collaborate with data product managers and modelers to address data discovery challenges.
  • Align on shared vocabularies across data domains for consumer needs.
  • Maintain a scalable and integrated ontology covering multiple data types and granularity levels.

Role-Based Competencies

Applicants should be adept in modeling taxonomies and ontologies to support data consumers, work across business, technical, and data science teams, and balance standardization with user-specific needs. The role entails autonomous problem solving and designing robust knowledge organization strategies.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as information science, computer science, or related disciplines.
  • At least 4 years’ experience in a metadata field including ontology, taxonomy, or semantics.
  • Experience with W3C standards (JSON, XML, RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS) and ontology tools (Protégé, TopQuadrant, PoolParty, Stardog, Neptune).
  • Proficiency with SQL or SPARQL.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in a relevant field.
  • Understanding of controlled vocabularies, graph databases, and Agile methodologies.
  • Project management experience is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary ranges vary by location, with Cambridge, MA and McLean, VA positions offering approximately $158,400 to $180,800, and New York, NY positions offering between $172,800 and $197,200. This role may include performance-based incentives such as cash bonuses and long term incentives.
