Role Overview

Assistant Professors at Capella University are full-time faculty members providing educational services to degree, certificate, and non-degree learners. This role requires meeting Capella University's expectations, fostering effective relationships with learners, colleagues, staff, and administration. Assistant Professors are expected to be nimble, flexible, and willing to take on essential duties within their department, school, or the university. They ensure learners receive quality educational experiences consistent with course outcomes and accreditation standards, delivering high-quality, impactful, and inclusive experiences that result in exceptional learning outcomes.

Capella values the scholarly-practitioner model, encouraging Assistant Professors to engage in continuous learning and development through scholarly activities or professional practice. Responsibilities include online teaching, graduate-level mentoring and committee work, and contributing to curriculum development. Faculty also participate in school governance via committees and other university activities based on need and skill set.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Teaching and Instruction: Serve as a highly engaged instructor, consistently exceeding expectations. Use course data to improve individual teaching performance and contribute to course refinement. Regularly review feedback to enhance learner experience.
• Doctoral Mentoring: Demonstrate strong knowledge of dissertation and doctoral capstone processes. Interact effectively with learners, build relationships, and offer guidance. Successfully chair and serve on doctoral committees, facilitating timely completion of research.
• Curriculum and Course Development: Understand Capella’s course development process and collaborate with cross-functional partners to deliver high-quality curriculum. Participate in designing, developing, and improving courses, ensuring sensitivity, diversity, and inclusiveness.
• School and University Governance: Exhibit leadership in governance roles, actively participating in committees to drive positive impact. Serve as role models and peer mentors among faculty.
• Professional Service and Practice: Contribute professional knowledge to local communities and professional networks, representing the “Capella Brand” and mission.
• Research and Scholarship: Stay current in scholarly fields, demonstrating expertise through writing, speaking, and conference attendance.
• Leadership through Team Engagement: Take on essential roles and duties within the department, school, or university, contributing innovative ideas and adapting to immediate needs, including specialized assignments like faculty meetings, residencies, and faculty development.
